In her farewell season premiere today, Oprah gave away hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts and prizes to a mostly white woman audience that probably could easily do without. She also gave the audience of 300 a trip to Australia in a plane piloted by John Travolta. Maybe on the way she can stop in Iran to pick up its latest hostage.

From ABC News:

Price of Freedom for American Hiker in Iran: $500K Bail in Cash

I wonder if any of the screaming audience members would ever say, "Hey, Oprah. I'd like to donate my portion of the money you paid for trip to the Iranian hostage's bail."

Swiss diplomats negotiating with Iran on behalf of the United States for the release of an American woman accused of espionage have hit another road block: This time in the form of cash -- $500,000 to be exact -- that Iranian officials have demanded as the woman's bail.

It's the latest dip in an emotional roller coaster for the family of 32-year-old Sarah Shourd that began in earnest last Thursday when top Iranian officials, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, announced that Shourd would be released Sept. 11. There was no mention of bail. Officials in Iran's

It proves that somebody who hikes in Iran is too stupid for even Oprah to help.

While it is too bad a woman is being held prisoner in some other country(Iran), what people do with their own money is their business. Oprah, while no angel, does not owe the aforementioned woman anything and just why does the author think she should bail this person out, and why does he think the audience owes her anything?

So white women can do without? Is this a new decree from on high?

I have no problem at all with what people do with their money. And the hiker shouldn’t have been there to begin with. All I’m saying is that the wealthy liberals always crying about the need for us to give more won’t even give this hiker a second look.

You took the words right out of my mouth! When this story first broke I was left wondering, who, in their right mind, would think hiking in that part of the world could possibly be a good idea. I can only guess they went with their parents approval.

As if all of these 'gifts' are coming out of Oprah's pocket. They're provided by sponsors, who are writing it off as advertising, which it is.

Not to mention that each audience member has to pay taxes on the value of the gifts.

Just ask all those people who got 'free' Pontiacs a couple of years ago.

It’s not a decree. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a free country and anybody should pursue anything they desire. These white women don’t look like they would pursue a handout from anybody else but Oprah. And that’s sad.

So did Rachel Corrie.

You have no idea whether Sarah Shourd & her family want the $500,000 bail paid or not. Paying that amount on condition that she return to Iran whenever the regime requests her to while her boyfriend & friend are still there, may not be a ransom or extortion that they want to pay.

It’s no more Oprah’s responsibility to pay this woman’s way out, just because Oprah is a lib, than it is a rich Republican’s responsibility to pay mercenaries to hunt down Al Qaeda members—sure, I’d like if they did, but no one has the right to assess and pronounce judgment on anyone else’s private spending.

Plus it’s fun watching a rich lib spend like a caricature of an evil rich person.

How many “just out for a hike” Americans citizens have to be held captive by despots before they stop playing chicken with their borders?

Wow! This article reflects what most dumba$$ Americans think. A poll that says that 58% are FOR the “rich” paying more come January is very telling. Most are simply too stupid and drugged up on kool-aid to realize the rippling effects of the expiration of the Bush tax cuts.

The “rich white ladies” should give their money up, Oprah should give up hers for the hostage...right out of the progressive playbook.

It is refreshing to see Oprah being attacked by her own!

Maybe they could stop over in Iran for the stoning as part of Oprah’s campaign for tolerance and counter-Islamophobia?

First of all, I never said these “rich white ladies” should give up their money. It’s the hypocrisy of the whole deal. These women in the audience look like they would never stoop so low as to stand in line to receive a government handout, but they’re all for receiving the free handout from a celebrity. What’s the difference? The status of getting a free trip, mobile device, perfume, etc. They are no different than beggars because many probably jumped through hoops to get these tickets.

It’s also about hypocrisy on the part of rich liberals who never knew a humanitarian cause they didn’t want taxpayers to fund. Yet many don’t seem to let loose with their own funds for similar causes.

And I’m all for extending any and all tax cuts.
