IDAHO FALLS - "Evan is not a murderer he is a soldier," says Evan Vela's father, Curtis Carnahan.
Freedom, that's what Curtis Carnahan wants for his 25-year-old son, Evan Vela, a U.S. Army Sniper convicted of murder. Vela is currently waiting for his parole hearing October 7th in Arlington, Virgina. He was convicted of murdering an Iraqi civilian in Baghdad in February 2008, then sentenced for ten years at Fort Leavenworth Prison. In order for Vela to be released early, the Army Parole Board needs to hear a parole plan and the parole panel's remarks. Vela's family has been working hard at home to create a parole plan for him. Ken's Construction in Burley has offered to hire Vela full-time and provide him, his wife, and their two young children housing. Vela's father feels confident the parole board will give him that release date.
"It's going to be a great relief to have Evan back home where he belongs," says Carnahan. "It's been a real struggle and ordeal in the beginning to have him go through this. You know we've done everything we possibly could."
Even though Carnahan is confident his son will be home soon, according to him, at the last internal parole panel review two weeks ago, the panel did not see remorse from Vela.
"My biggest fear is they will say no, because the parole panel at Leavenworth Prison asked him if he was sorry he murdered somebody, and he said no he wasn't sorry, because he didn't murder somebody," says Carnahan. "He killed somebody under direct order... but Evan doesn't have any remorse because he's a solider, he was trained to do and ordered to do what he did."
Prayers for this family and the travesty they are faced with.

If he was indeed following orders, why was he tried and convicted? Why was he not pardoned?
We tried to get Bush to Pardon him, but Bush apparently said he didn’t want to do a bunch of pardons at the end of his term like Clinton did. The person who did the asking (of George) is a close friend of Jeb and George. He volunteered to help because he thought this was complete crap.
Thank you.
Bush’s focus on a “New Tone” cost all of us a great deal and gained nothing.
Hopefully he will use his skills wisely when he gets out.
Got to be careful as he shot one of Bush’s great Religion Cranks! We cannot have that as they are MUCH better than us in Georges mind, same for Mexican Drug Smugglers.Bastard!
Yea, verily.
The kill was approved via his Lt and the onsite Staff Sergeant. The guy killed walked up on a sniper team who were in position. This guy pulled his sidearm upon the orders of his superior and shot the Iraqi.
His grandfather taught all the boys how to sneak through the trees and blow an animals head off with a rifle. For what it’s worth.
Prayers for the family and Evan being released, it’s way past time and he should have never been convicted.
I have been following these posts for a while. I will pray for his release so that he can get back to his family. It is criminal what he and y’all have been through.
They sent the man’s son away and then killed the man and planted a rifle on him, weird.
I've thought for a long time that the inmates are running the asylum. Sucks even more when they are criminally insane.
Thanks for the support.
After the trial, Hensley told “the son” he made a mistake letting him go. He went on from there. From what I was told it wasn’t pretty.
Wonder if you’ve read the Esquire article at the link a couple of posts back?
From that article:
” “In the end, it comes down to, When that guy walked in my hide site, I made a decision. It was my decision. Nobody else made it, nobody else could make it, because nobody else had the whole picture. Evan Vela killed that guy because I ordered him to and because he had no reason not to. Was it a good kill? It’s a good kill because I say it’s a good kill. That’s why I was there. That’s why the battalion put me there.””

None of the URLs that you have posted concerning his story and for donations seem to be working anymore.
Is there a new website concerning his plight?
Yes I did read it, that is where I got the details that I mentioned.
