The part where they are sitting in the living room and the ghosts starts baning on the walls in the hall and then it gets to the door and the door starts slowly bending in is one of the scariest scenes in movies I ever saw.

...*smiles*...two buddies and I got thrown out of a movie because of what we did during that movie.......
the place was packed with teenagers,...it was a rainy day and we took our seats and four girls sat down in the row in front of us....during the bathtub shot where they showed the hand coming up from the blood....I got down amongst the ju-ju beans and milk duds with my buddies umbrella with the curved handle and reached under this girls seat and grab her ankle with the umbrella handle.....WELL.....she let out such a blood curdling scream...it scared me...but she started a wave of screams.....by the time I got ,my buddies were long gone and ushers were on their way. I surrendered.

Halloween.

And I wasn’t so much a kid when my wife and I saw it - I was 29. When we left the movie theater and went out into the parking lot to our car, I checked out the back seat just to make sure.

As a kid, probably the most intense horror movie was The Haunting, a 1963 movie based on The Haunting of Hill House.

That late 50s Earth vs. the Spider was memorable. I want to think I had some nightmares after that one.

Stephen Kings IT, also the only book that scared me reading it, damn, man has a hold of human emotion, one of the best character writers that has ever existed. Kings book the Stand is probably one of the best morality plays ever written (tv movie wasn't good), the characterization in that book was the absolute best I have ever read, and I have read some good authors, Heinlein, Clark, Asimov, still, even as a SciFi fan the first time I read the Stand I fell in love and the first time I read IT I was scared sh!tless.

TARANTULA!!!

Back on New Years Eve a buddy of mine would come over. My parents would be out for the evening. One of the four TV stations would run back to back episodes of various horror movies. Between overdoing it on homemade milkshakes and popcorn, talking to truckers on dad’s CB base station with the huge antenna (10+ miles), and watching Tarantula, The Blob, ANTS!!!, etc. we had a great time!

“The Freak”. It effed me up for life.

Seriously tho ... The one thing that scared the livin bejeezus out of me as a kid was the old “In Search Of” ep on the Elephant Man. And I was probably in 4th grade at the time. The ep was particularly creepy (even for THAT series) and I came away with the belief that it could happen spontaneously to any one.

The Superman episode with the little men from the center of the earth terrified me for days.

I remember that episode. It certainly did catch attention.
