Uh.... Doesn’t the Kindle have the ability to READ the text? Out loud? Wouldn’t that work for blind people?

Don’t the blind have to buy books done in Braille anyway? They don’t use regular books now. Maybe Amazon could produce a new Kindle with voice option for the blind?

The Kindle 3 does have a voice option, that is what makes this silly.

FTA, a blind person could not navigate the menu system to get it to the text-to-speech function, therefore nobody is allowed to use it.

be discontinued until e-books can be "accessible" to blind people

No problem, I am sure there is software to convert text to speech with little system load and pipe into earphones. The issue here is control, or the power to brainwash the masses.

By the way, there are other formats than the Kindle. And there is a ton of literature available in .txt format and HTML format on Project Gutenberg. http://www.gutenberg.org

“Kindle violated the “civil rights” of the blind and so, e-books violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.”

Idiocy. One could also make an arguement that college textbooks violate the “civil rights” of the mentally retarded or the educationally disadvantaged.

"Publishing houses are a way to funnel payola to candidates though media conglomerates. Their way or no way."

The publishing industry has repeatedly tried to kill electronic books. Seems an author doesn't really need a publisher when you can just upload your book to Amazon or some other electronic book seller and charge 5 bucks for which the author get 70% of the proceeds.

We can't have that, the Luddites in the book producing business would be out of a job.

I think they need to go for the car manufacturers, not to mention gun manufacturers. It’s time we fix this!

Also remember that its common for the usually liberal Higher ED elite to HAVE to publish in order to gain tenure. Its just a dog and pony show that generates revenue for universities and just costs families more money when the universities require students to buy all this liberal drivel.

Zero came from this environment and the DOJ is protecting their turf.

Panic is setting in. The left has spent generations producing whole libraries of textbooks that spin reality their way and driving out any competing philosophies. Now, thanks to technology, they are suddenly faced with the very real prospect that everything will have to be rewritten from scratch. They can’t just transpose every old book to the new technology because of byzantine copyright laws.

I was not aware that the blind are capable of reading a standard, printed book. When are they going to ban books?
