Genuine conservatives would have restrained, as best they could, Democratic proposals to cure what ails us, for genuine conservatives are of course genuinely wary of too much change, too fast. But they would not have made a political game of uniform obstructionism; they would not have toyed with, of all things, unemployment benefits; and they most decidedly would not be advocating trillions in extended tax cuts while in the grips of such looming debt.

Genuine conservatives want to slash taxes and eliminate some enormous federal agencies that have gone out of control, like the EPA. Genuine conservatives would privatise the roads, courts, and the military!

Oops! Pardon my typo, but it seems that our stinky little troll thinks we’re too stupid to realize what a fifth columnist is.

Oh, was that you? I thought it was the bug zapper. Sorry.A subdued response on the surface, but beneath lies a stinging sarcasm that will leave the ZOTtee with a lasting impression and possibly a migraine headache.

One of the few bright spots of having the democrats in charge is finally seeing Republicans saying NO to the right things. This talk of ‘making a game of...’ makes it sound as if it is evil. Do not forget Democrats were rewarded in two elections for playing games like these. In fact they are still now playing the ‘forget about us and fear GW Bush coming back ’game .
Even blocking the deficit funded unemployment benefits issue works AGAINST democrats for this brief segment of time(as long as those running for office don't call the unemployed lazy) because democrats are forced to point out how bad THEIR economy is, and it passed anyway. If a Republican was president (Bush, McCain) they would be forced politically to pass the benefits as fast as possible running up the $$$ tab, to hell with the future.
This author talks as if Bush was still president or McCain had won. Obama is in charge and it is his failed economy policies voters are living with now not the minority's anymore. Drive that point home over and over to voters.

Older than that, it is a reference to the media. The “Fourth Estate or Fifth Column, Dis-informers” is an old term to describe how the media tries to become a column of government through disinformation and manipulating the other levels of government and society. The origin of the term Fifth Column came from Spain where General Mola claimed to have supporters fighting in Madrid while he was leading four columns of his army to invade the city during the Spanish Civil War.
