The Family Research Council has leveled strong criticism against plans by Amtrak for the passenger train service to use tax dollars to promote travel to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered passengers. Amtrak plans to spend a quarter-million dollars recruiting homosexual passengers. The Family Research Council points out Amtrak isn't a private business, and this government-run business is now spending 250-thousand dollars taken directly from the pockets of taxpayers, during these difficult economic times. Spokesman Peter Sprigg points out that this is further proof the Obama Administration has gone OFF THE RAILS by allowing Amtrak to spend this money, insulting the millions of Americans who have deeply-held moral convictions against this lifestyle. Sprigg says, "yet Washington is targeting the demographically small homosexual population probably because marketing surveys suggest it is also one of the richest meaning the Administration may be more interested in riding the "gravy train" than getting the culture "back on track."

They keep sticking to the story that only 2% of America is homosexual. Still all we hear today is homosexual this and homosexual that, and now Amtrak is spending money to attract 2% of riders. Doesn’t make sense.

If this latest flap could kill AMTRAK, I'd be on the bandwagon with the FRC. Unfortunately, it's not the kind of scandal that has political legs except among the "religious right." If you recall, Falwell and Co. were highly incensed about some of the "exhibits" funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and there was serious talk about defunding it.
Nevertheless, the NEA keeps chugging along on a budget of under $200 million, which is approximately .6% of AMTRAK's annual appropriation.
Both have loyal constituencies who would march on Washington to keep their pet program alive.
Both NEA and AMTRAK should be killed, but not for being indecent or pro-homosexual. They are, quite simply, performing functions not authorized for the federal government.
Correction to the above: AMTRAK gets $1.96 billion from the taxpayers every year, so the NEA appropriation is approximately 8% of AMTRAK’s. Sorry.

Childish hyperbole. Whatever their opinion of homosexuals, how many people actually give a darn about an Amtrak advertisement.
Amtrak offers a service few use. If we allow Amtrak to advertise to build up its business, why should it not peruse any population demographic it identifies as a reasonably potential market? I’m assuming there are other campaigns underway for other demographics.
If Amtrak’s entire ad budget is aimed at gay bars he may have a point. Otherwise, business is business. This guy should chill. He sounds like a fool.
A gay guy in Detroit boards a train at 8:00 in the morning heading for Sanfransciso. Another gay guy in Seattle boards a train at 3:00 in the afternoon heading for Dallas. The Amtrak trains are running 18 hours late. In which town does each man realize he’s never taking a train again?
