Next they will buy out motel six and build units behind the grade schools for the convenience of the ‘working families’.

Or as Nancy Pelosi likes to call them, “our workers.”

Sounds like the former USSR. They then had camps for the summer.

It seems to me he was talking about the buildings being available after school hours for enrichment programs...not the teachers.

Churches used to have programs and did the things that they now demand from government. Churches used to feed the poor....now they bus voters to the polls to vote for the candidates who will spend more tax dollars on entitlement programs.

Duncan said. If you practice basketball five times a week, you’re gonna be better than the people who practice three times a week.”

Sharp as a tack, isn't he.

One-sized-fits-all remedies from the federal government don’t work. In fact, one-sized-fits-all remedies tend to stifle creativity at the local level."

Don't let obama hear you say that.

No thanks. The traditional school year works well enough (although my opinion is that adding about 5-10 more days would make it work better). Duncan needs to close his department’s doors and go home- the Federal government is more of a hindrance than a help in any case.

We have a Latch Key program at our school that begins at 7:30 in the morning. After school we have an ACE program that entends the school day until 6:30 in the evening. Kids that ride the bus don't walk into their homes until around 7:30 that evening.

Way to long of a school day.

What happen to running home, from the bus stop at 3:00 so you could get home in time to watch Dark Shadows. Those were the days.

Let’s first see if any teachers can learn these kids grammar. Then move on to how much is 2 + 2. Next see if the kids can find the Pacific Ocean on a map. Finally, kids must be disabused of the notion that Lincoln bombed Pearl Harbor in 1492.

Ofcourse they do.

Funny though, their strongest indoctrination occurs at the graduate degree level. many do not it out of the MBA programs with their thinking skills in tact.

So, it appears time immersed does not equal outcome. However long term exposure may?

“Nothing moves people as quickly as the opportunity for more funding, especially at a time like today,” Duncan said.

That's right Arne. Get the locals to do what you want under the guise of improvement by taking their money by taxation and then holding it hostage, while taking your own cut, of course. Insidious.

It takes at least a 12 hour day and several years of training to learn how to get a condom on a banana.

Not sure he is wrong (that kids need more serious schooling for the modern era ahead, a better work ethic inculcated early)

There will be very few jobs in the future for the left side of the bell curve, which is half the population. Their jobs are either shipped to China, taken by illegals, or replaced by automation and robotics. There's no point in instilling a strong work ethic or wasting limited taxpayer resources on an equal-outcome education for all students.

I’m with Skyler.

I learned how to read myself when I was 4, so when I went to school, I was horribly bored and the teacher didn’t like me. It went downhill from there...

If schools had been different, I would have liked them, since I really liked reading and many other “subjects”. One aspect I hated was the long hours of inactivity and incarceration with so many people.

My parents had to drag me across the street, crying, to go to first grade. I guess I got used to it after a while, but I did drop out as soon as I could.

The whole system sucks - methods, topics, indoctrination, etc.

Does this Duncan creep have any children, or any who DON’T go to private schools? Truly, at best, all these czars can be called control freaks of the highest order. The idea here seems to be to exhaust children all the more to make them vulnerable to the ongoing government propaganda that will increasingly comprise the ENTIRE school curriculum> that, and , with Michelle’s anti-obesity directives filtering down into the lunchroom, American kids will wind up looking like the kids in North Korea, falling asleep in the classroom.

When they properly use all of the six hours they get now and it turns out not to be enough, THEN we can talk about more hours. As long as there’s banana contraception and stuff of similar educational merit going on, why would anyone believe claims that they need MORE time?
