It just keeps getting worse for southern Dem Congressman Harry Teague. Perhaps the biggest news from a Politico report is that Teague's oil-based fortune has plunged in value from an estimated $40 million to$5 million. That may not be a paltry sum, but Teague wrote himself checks for $1.7 million to get elected in '08. Would he be able or willing to do the same this cycle in which he faces a very difficult opponent in former GOP Congressman Steve Pearce?
And then there is the $2.7 million lawsuit leveled against four companies Teague owns. The suits are over outstanding loans.
The companies are now being run by Teague's son and daughter in law and the congressman says they are working to settle the loan issue.
But events may be spinning out of control for Teague and his tenuous hold on the most conservative of the state's three congressional districts.
The Politico reported in May how Teague's companies canceled health insurance for their 250 employees, even as Teague was taking a $2.7 million profit out of the company and even after his 2008 campaign bragged on how well he treated his workers.
Paying for the employee health insurance might get Teague back some political capital, but with the worth of his companies plunging, that's no longer easily done.
Teague has always walked a tightrope in the district that had not elected a Democrat in nearly 30 years until he won in the '08 Obama landslide Now it looks as though Harry is tottering.

In an ABQ Journal story last Friday, Pearce campaign manager Jason Heffley criticized Teague, saying the lawsuit "mirrors his record in Congress. He went on a spending spree, passed legislation that kills jobs and is leaving red ink and unpaid bills all around."
NM list PING!
(The NM list is available on my FR homepage for anyone to use. Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
Good, that liberal bastard needs to go down. I just wish the idiot we have here in Albuquerque would also go down.
I just got back from a week in Chama, N.M,
NOrth central.
Absolutely beautiful.
Nightly we saw a herd of over a thousand elk come out of the woods about dusk.
Did you do the Cumbres & Toltec RR ride ?
Even tho I grew up in and around NM (my Mom was from Roswell and we lived various places in the state, but mostly in the southeastern part) I have never been to Chama. But it’s on my list. It’s one thing I love about NM. It’s got such a variety of things, from mountains to desert. Most people have no idea. Wish the Hollywood types had never discovered it.
No,
But we stayed at the R.V. park about a mile north of it.
Had done the Durango Silverton recently and the Cumbres & Toltec pretty much follows the road to the top.
Beautiful area.
Funny story,
We ate breakfast at a local place and a young Indian boy was our waiter.
We talked of fishing and he asked about Florida offshore and I asked about the rivers there.
He showed a few recent photos of some real nice brown trout he’d gotten.
I asked what he used, Fly? Spinnning reel?
And he told me sheepishly that he’d found them in a shallow pool in a lowering river and had gotten them by hand.
I understand exactly what you are saying.
Course if you lived in say L.A. or maybe Bakersfield you’d want to flee to New Mexico too.
Yes, I would, but I would be smart enough not to bring the reasons I wanted to leave with me! :)
Here in my part of Florida there is an enormous amount of folks who moved from N.Y. cause 24 years ago the Mets moved their spring training here.
Sooo all those who moved here or visit are famous for saying, “that’s not how we do it up north”.
Or Every damn thing is better up north.
Ya want a bunch of ex N.Y. types to go with those pain in the rear Californians?
Yup, here in S FL we are all filled up with New Yorkers. I feel your pain. I’m not sure which is worse. :)
French Canadians.
(-:
OK, yes you got me there.
Long time since I’ve been fishing. The Durango-Silverton is a bit different from the C&T (I haven’t been on the D&S, but took the drive that was above the line between the two towns, so I could see the difference). The best time to do the C&T is in the fall. I did it in early October (back in ‘05) and you see all the colors. I hope to go back to Durango to do the other ride.
By the way - we entered from four corners and I have to tell you, Shiprock is a pretty lousy gateway (my wife was in tears). Is there any chance we can give it to Colorado?
Teague has inspired me to edit my tag line
We just moved to NM. Actually Hobbs but we are in Roswell tonight. All that we have seen so far seems nice (excepting the town mentioned a couple posts up).
Durango area is my Wife’s favorite.
I’ll go back there in a minute.
But like you say the fall there is like Heaven.
Used to drive thru Hobbs all the time (we lived in Midland for about 15 years). I think a lot of people hate the desolation of that part of the country. I don’t mind it, and the people are generally nice. I think when you live where you might need your neighbor, you are more neighborly.
