Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 can read your iPhone's secrets
ZDNet ^ | May 27, 2010 | Adrian Kingsley-Hughes

Do you have a PIN code on your iPhone? Well, while that might protect you from someone making a call or fiddling with your apps, it doesn’t prevent access to your data … as long as the person doing the snooping around is using Ubuntu “Lucid Lynx” 10.04.

Security experts Bernd Marienfeldt and Jim Herbeck discovered something really interesting when they hooked up a non-jailbroken, fully up-to-date iPhone 3GS to a PC running Lucid Lynx …

I uncovered a data protection vulnerability [9], which I could reproduce on 3 other non jail broken 3GS iPhones (MC 131B, MC132B) with different iPhone OS versions installed (3.1.3-7E18 modem firmware 05.12.01 and version 3.1.2 -7D11, modem 05.11.07) , all PIN code protected which means the vulnerability bypasses authentication for various data where people most likely rely on data protection through encryption and do not expect that authentication is not in place.

I do have a final essay to write today for my class, so I really need to get off this. So I’ll try to take your advice and ignore everyone for a while (at least until I need a break).

Please don’t post anything earth shattering until late tonight when I hopefully will have my essay finished :-)

I can live with that; am I a GD EVIL LIAR too? :)

I’ve found that just sticking to the facts, and tenaciously refusing to get sidetracked either progresses the discussion, or the hard-headed individual on the other side simply goes away. Either result, the problem is solved!

Sometimes. In this case, as you can see from the thread, they just keep on posting. And yes, the mods have seriously dropped the ball on these trolls. When you post a thread, then immediately start posting insults against other freepers, once upon a time, that would buy you a time-out. Personally, I think one of the children is a mod, which largely explains why noone seems to give a damn.

Probably I just have an issue with the GD part.

You’re talking the mac threads that get posted right?

Or possibly it's actually the macbots that are calling people the names and are disruptive on these threads? And maybe the mods are doing their jobs but just think the macbots are whiners. Oh and the mods did pull some posts in the other thread...I believe they were all posted by macobts.

Hmmmmmm....I wonder. Do I trust a group of mods or zeugma and his childish "I'm not listening to you and you are a troll because you have pointed out flaws in apple's systems" posts? Man tough one but I'll go with the mods on this.

Great job mods. Keep up the good work.

personally the Gosh Darn part isn’t what would get me...it’s the EVIL part. How is it so special to call you evil for pointing out Apple’s flaws? That would pretty much put them in a religious camp if they consider such things evil.

Kind of like when church leaders call people evil and they are really just trying to cover their tracks. Televangelists really come to mind here for me. The Apple lovers are in a cult...that’s clear to me now.

Well, I was accused of sinning against some of the Mac zealots here, and they got might-testy when I suggested they should submit themselves as a caucus in the Religion forum so they could have the "peace and isolation" they desire, so...

Perhaps it is closer to a religion than they're willing to admit?

But hey, that's just the words of a GD EVIL LIAR. Next thing you know they'll call me:

I'd still vote for Cthulhu before Obama, though...

It apparently takes more than just a few repetitions to beat it through some people's thick skulls that I have nothing to discuss with them. I have no time for trolls. I don't particularly think it concerns you, so perhaps you can stop worrying about it quite so much.

I would, however, point out yet another post concerning windows that doesn't seem to have attracted the hordes of Apple sycophants that one might expect if the troll's oft repeated assertion that they are just doing to Mac threads what happens on ms-windows threads.

Read again:

Of course, you hate Apple with an unbridled passion, so it shouldn't surprise me that you take every opportunity to poke at OS-X with a stick, even when it makes you look stupid to do so.

NOTE: I did not say one derogatory statement about OSX in that entire thread. But right there, the attacks start out.

It's NT6.1. Microsoft is gonna have to throw out the ancient, creaky NT codebase before they can write something that I'd call "slick" from a technical point of view... I gotta ask you, though. Do you write marketing copy for Microsoft? I'm not saying you're a MSFT shill -- I'm just saying you sound like one sometimes

Again, nothing stated derogatory against any person or anything Apple, but here I'm a shill and the OS is ancient and creaky.

Yet another windows thread where you don’t find dozens or even a few posts insulting windows users

Posted by you just a few posts after those two preceding posts...

You sure have an interesting definition of "no insults". But as we've recently learned, many Mac fans at FR have interesting definitions for standard words and phrases.

I know there are many, but in this case, when you lock your Android (or WinMo, or BB, or Symbian) phone it doesn't automount as a device when you plug it into a computer.

Proof?

Leave your iPhone at your desk when you run to the bathroom. I walk over, plug it into my laptop (dual-boot with Ubuntu), take 30 seconds to copy the entire contents, then leave.

30 seconds to copy 16GB? I don't think so.
