C3PO: “Etiquette and Protocol Robot”

A great deal of the internet is populated by C2PO wanna bees. If you ever watched a Star Wars movie (and who hasn’t) you know the shiny gold robot named C3PO whose purpose is “etiquette and protocol.” The internet has developed its own system of etiquette and protocol. One of these is an abhorrence of what is referred to as “link whoring” which is defined as encouraging people to click on your website. According to this protocol the internet virgin is supposed to sit demurely on the sidelines, knees tightly together, until she is spotted by a search engine like Google.

This phenomenon was one I recently experienced at one of my favorite sites, FreeRepublic.

TweetMeme is a widget that readers of a blog which uses the widget can tweet a link to it with a single click. Many bloggers use it. It is even embedded in youtube video pages.

The funniest part of this whole episode is your supposed mission here is to rail against this minor blogger so he won't get "hits"; however, I'm sure it's dawned on you that all of the attention you have given him and his blog has surely driven more traffic to his site than he could have ever dreamed of doing without you.

In your infinite wisdom you must have weighed your options - ignoring the entire thread (which is the worst thing that can happen for someone hoping for "hits") OR run your yap and personally attack the blogger while accusing him/her of all kinds of malfeasance, including trying to drive traffic to his blog, KNOWING that would peak people's interest...thus driving traffic to his blog and defeating the SUPPOSED purpose of your comments in the first place.

This can only mean 1 of 2 things. Either your inflated opinion of yourself is so large you actually could care less if he gets traffic from FR (despite your bleatings) AS LONG AS YOU GET TO STOMP YOUR FEET AND SCREAM "LISTEN TO ME!"...
