It is a conundrum, isn’t it? Not any sort of expert, but I think many American Jews got locked into the Rat party way back during the times that they were discriminated against in the workplace and in housing. Jews often played a big part in protesting racial segregation against blacks, and part of that was probably due to empathy engendered by their own experience as targets of bigotry. Many of these activists got started in urban areas, where Rats organized on a much larger scale than Republicans. Somehow, they came to link the Rats with more social equality.
