Hyundai and ABC Sports mock Catholics during the World Cup
ABC and ESPN via WyBlog ^ | 6/13/2010 | Chris Wysocki

Posted on 06/13/2010 9:37:54 AM PDT by Notwithstanding

At mass this morning Monsignor Desmond called our attention to an appalling ad he saw while watching the World Cup yesterday. Hyundai chose to mock the Blessed Sacrament in a misguided attempt to sell a few more of their crappy cars. And nobody at ABC Sports thought it was in poor taste for them to do so.

The imagery is blasphemous and patently insulting to any devout Catholic. Hyundai's sacrilege has to be intentional. There is too much Catholic ritual incorporated, and mocked, for this to be happenstance.

You can bet your bottom dollar they wouldn't pull a stunt like this with Islam!

Whatever happens to Israel happens to Europe and America and not necessarily in that order.

Why did’nt ABC and Hyundai mock that barbaric and backwards Islam?

You know what is always interesting about these mockeries though. If in that commercial, they are truly singing the words of God from John 1:29, the last laugh is on the idiots in the commercial. Just like when the mockers scoffed at Jesus, they still put that crown upon his head with the words, “King of the Jews.” God will not be mocked and I just can’t imagine the gall of people who do.

Your sacrilegious advertisement during the World Cup Soccer Games is beyond comprehension. As a Catholic, I will NEVER purchase a Hyundai and I will broadcast your hate speech advertisement all over the Internet.

You owe EVERY Catholic an apology and you have done a huge disservice to your Company for allowing such irreverence to be produced and disseminated under your banner!

THIS WAS MY EMAIL TO HYUNDAI.

Is Hyundai making fun of the church or of soccer fans who take themselves far too seriously. The "church" they are referring to is the Iglesia Maradoniana in Argentina dedicated to Diego Maradona. Here's some info on it (they even reference the soccer ball with the crown of thorns shown in the commercial)

.

You make a very good point. What gets me is I think soccer is boring and I do not understand the rage for this “sport.”

They’d get death threats from Muslims. Nobody will mock that religion in public. Satan is very clever.

Parody is one thing, it is another entirely when you insult some pretty deeply-held beliefs, the *crown* around a ball to imitate the crown of thorns on Christ, whatever gross snack item being offered mocking the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist to name just two in this offensive ad.

People all over claim to hold some sport or another as religion, they worship players, etc. Fine. But it goes way over the line to demean the religious beliefs of millions just to sell cars -- it's an attempt at humor and it fails, big time.

Short and to the point. Perfect. Too many people send long rants to businesses. They don’t even read them. A short note like this will be read! Good job.

Perhaps it is because we are in the south, but unless there is a tournament we never have scheduled games on Sunday morning and rarely Sunday afternoon. And my kids play soccer practically year round.

On tournament weekends we attend Saturday evening Mass so it’s all good, but my kids have had teammates who skip games to go to church.

What about the poor 7th Day Adventist or Jewish kids who worship on Saturday?

There is La Iglesia Maradoniana, a “church” in Argentina composed of Diego Maradona soccer fans, but they do NOT meet in a church. They meet in a sports bar. The scenes in the church are fantasies of the advertising agency. Now whether the sports bar “church” mocks Catholic ritual is another topic...

Your comparison is idiotic,of course.

In an age when people can have their life threatened for even drawing a stick-figure image of Muhammad, it becomes an act of utter cowardice to mock anyone else’s religious iconography. That’s the point.

Remember how quickly THIS as was pulled?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad4fagTyaM4

If you live a moral, peaceful, law-abiding life, and consciously pose no threat to others, you’re a ripe target for ridicule.

Frankly, I grew up in the “sticks and stones” period, so I generally don’t get upset when my faith is attacked or lampooned. But let it get physical, and all bets are off.

You are right, they would NOT stand up to the Muzzies, but I, as a Roman Catholic, was not that offended by this ad. It was more silly, to me. And it did not make me want to buy a Hundai - it did not address their product at all.
