At mass this morning Monsignor Desmond called our attention to an appalling ad he saw while watching the World Cup yesterday. Hyundai chose to mock the Blessed Sacrament in a misguided attempt to sell a few more of their crappy cars. And nobody at ABC Sports thought it was in poor taste for them to do so.
The imagery is blasphemous and patently insulting to any devout Catholic. Hyundai's sacrilege has to be intentional. There is too much Catholic ritual incorporated, and mocked, for this to be happenstance.
You can bet your bottom dollar they wouldn't pull a stunt like this with Islam!
Roman Catholics, the new Jews of the West.
ping for later
Considering the number of South American Catholics that LOVE soccer, this was a dumb move. Not to mention crude.
Lets issue a fatwa agaist them and kill off a few Hyundai
and ABC executives. I mean who do they think they are denigrating Allah, errrr..ooops, God?(sarc.)
The people in the ad are not from a real church. Its a group of soccer fans who celebrate soccer by mocking sacred religious prayers, rituals and articles of others - and they dont even claim to be a church - they claim to be soccer fans.
In fact, they mock the very scriptures themselves.
John 1:29 begins: Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Those are the words to the song the man in the Hyundai commercial chants in latin.
This is mockery of Christ and his followers. Nothing more, nothing less.
Yawn..
I don’t see the reason for the outrage.
Where can we contact Hyundai to share our outrage?
You are so right. I am not Roman Catholic but I am a Christian. Years ago there was an excellent column by a man named Michael Horowitz who said that Christians would be the next Jews. It makes perfect sense.
Response: Of course. In case you have not noticed Western Civilization is under ever increasing assault. The Christian religion is inextricably bound up with Western Civilization, the rest logically follows.
I don’t know why everyone would get their panties in a wad about this. Soccer is the religion of most Americans with young children, and Sunday morning is usually devoted to soccer games. If anything, this commercial an almost-accurate critique of American priorities. (The inaccuracy being it’s not about Americans.) The truth hurts, I guess.
Call your local Hyundai dealer and voice a protest. Enough complaints will raise their concern.
Well, when artists place a crucifix in a beaker of urine and call it “art,” and people support such art as that, or as blood being dripped from paper towels hanging on a wire that is strung over an audience, why should this Hyundai commercial be shocking?
I wouldn’t buy a crummy Hyundai anyway, insidious commercial or not.
Exactly, considering the amount of Catholics in the world, a very dumb move indeed.
Note to Chris Wysocki: Hyundai’s are not crappy cars anymore, I own one and I love it.
But, if you said Chrysler, I’d have to agree with you.
