How Money and Media could help

Waiting for BP to stop the oil leak and for somebody to score a goal at the soccer World Cup is very unsatisfying experience. How about trying some problem-solving the American way? Money is one of the best incentives proven to move dead souls in the right direction.

It will be easier with the soccer... Put a golden brick inside the net and if you hit it – it is yours. Even the goalies will be in attacking. There will be also more fist fights on the field. After all, the most memorable moment of the last World Cup was when Zinedine Zidane head-butted that Italian dude with the potty mouth. The clash is in the Hall of Fame of most memorable moments in sport – right there with Tyson chewing on Holyfield’s ear.

Not so easy to find positive incentives for BP. The cost control geek squad of the company is probably fiercely calculating from day one what will be cheaper: killing the well, or paying for the lawsuits and clean up... Auctioning the BP CEO Tony Hayward’s shares in the company for charity or shortening President Obama’s mandate with one week for every day of leaking oil: that may work but is likely unconstitutional so it is not an option.

The other approach is to put enough pressure on BP and the Federal Government so the cost of keeping the well leaking and producing will be greater than the costs of killing the well. There is only one tool to achieve that: Media that is alive and analyzing the issues with the well-being of the people of the land in mind.

Unfortunately it may be too late for that, because the Media was pronounced dead in 2008 and already snoozed through 50 days of disaster.

The idea of placing a brick of gold in the back of the net is a great idea. And if the goaly heads into it by accident that would be cool too in a bad Nascar crash type way.

I grew up in soccer watching country, however I still believe soccer is extremely boring.

I hope the USA will win today over England! I will watch this one. It is easier to watch soccer when you root emotionally for one of the teams.

Plus all over the world kids use bricks, rocks or whatever is available around to mark the goal lines - so majority of the players in the World Cup are used to it anyway.
