Is there anything a journalist cannot or will not twist to bring the topic back to how life would be so much better if only not for that awful George W. Bush? On Tuesday's CBS Evening News, with the help of the Washington Post's Sally Quinn, Sharyl Attkisson managed to blame news, that Al and Tipper Gore are separating, on how they never got over being denied the presidency despite winning the popular vote in 2000. If only Bush hadn't taken it from them.
Attkisson recalled it's been ten years since that oddly public passionate kiss at the Democratic convention. That was followed by Gore winning the popular vote for President but losing the electoral vote. Family friend Sally Quinn says that may have done the marriage irreparable harm.
Viewers then head from Quinn, who's married former Post Executive Editor Ben Bradlee and is now titular overseer of the paper's On Faith blog: He obviously suffered a lot and still is suffering. He'll never get over that and neither will she. (jpg of screen shot of Quinn)
Attkisson cheekily began her story: While Al Gore was out fighting global warming, his marriage to Tipper was apparently cooling.
On ABC's World News, Claire Shipman offered a simpler explanation, sans the political grudges: The Gores have told friends they've simply grown apart. Tipper embracing the perks of a post-political life like grandchildren and travel. The former Vice President relishing his role as an award-winning environmental activist and not eager to slow down. _________________________________________________________

Laurie David...makes perfect sense. She cleaned Larry out of $100 million or so, and went through her “boy toy” phase (as I recall, Larry caught her with some young stud, putting their divorce into motion).
With all that behind her, Ms. David is looking for someone with supposed stature and gravitas on the environmental issues she cares most about. Enter AlGore....
As for Al, it would make sense for him as well. He’s made good money since leaving the White House, but nothing like the $100 million plus accumulated by the Clintons. And, he’ll be facing the fury of a scorned wife, and the end of a 40-year marriage. If there’s any hint of infidelity on Al’s part, there isn’t a judge or jury in Tennessee that won’t give most of their accumulated wealth to the former Mrs. Gore.
Against that backdrop, I’m guessing that Al has found a prominent female environmentalist with deep pockets—someone who can keep him in the lifestyle he enjoys (with the accompanying carbon footprint the size of Tennessee) while he signs over millions in real estate, stocks and other holdings to Tipper. Think John Kerry going from one rich wife to an even richer one, and you’ve got the basic business plan. I don’t think Tipper came from any money, but the next Mrs. Gore certainly will.
LOL! Thanks.
You’re welcome. : )
