Hes got guts lots of guts! Im not sure if this was a press conference or a townhall style meeting. But Hot Air is reporting that Chris Christie opened the meeting up for questions and when teacher, Rita Wilson, complained that if she made $3 per day, per student, she would be making $83,000 a year and she doesnt make near that.
Christie replied, Youre getting more than that if you include the cost of your benefits. Wilson continued by saying that she has a masters degree and does not feel she was being fairly compensated. Christie said, Well, you know then that you dont have to do it. Your union said that is the greatest assault on public education in the history of the state, Christie said. Thats why the union has no credibility, stupid statements like that.
Gotta love him!!
Nice.
I like this guy. But I hear he’s pro-choice. True?
Academics live in a closed-loop, where they reinforce each other with notions that they are highly educated, have good judgement, are are sacrificing themselves for the public good.
“Wilson continued by saying that she has a masters degree”
In what? Education probably.
From everything I have read, he is firmly pro-life!
Heh. If they feel they are making such a sacrifice, or are doing it "for the children" then they should have no problem taking a 50% pay cut.
As for the particular teacher...... she must have known what she was getting into, and if she's that torqued about it, move to another state!
I do. If the NYC Council were made up of men like him, there'd be no chance that our Muslim enemies would be allowed to build a mosque on the site of the World Trade Center buildings to commemorate their victory over us.
I’m pretty sure that’s what I’ve read also. And good for him. If she doesn’t think she’s getting enough, then she needs to look for another job.
Don’t know about that, but he ain’t great when it comes to the Second Amendment.
I used to feel “sorry” for the teachers, until someone pointed out to me that their salaries are based on working for nine months out of the year, plus an incredible amount of days off during the regular school year (in California, it seems just about every two-three weeks they get yet another paid day off (”teacher planning day”). The rest of us pretty much work TWELVE months, with between two to four weeks paid days off.
If this whining teacher wants to be paid three bucks a head per day, she should open a day care center.
He had it out with another teacher a couple of weeks ago at a sports event. Stupid woman challenged him while he was trying to enjoy the event and he laced into her for several minutes.
A Cristie/Brewer ticket is looking real good right now for 2012.
New Jersey Pro-Life Group Backs Chris Christie Over Governor Corzine on Abortion
Reminds me of the whiners in California. Over half of the total state budget goes to school plus, of course, property taxes and lottery proceeds.
There is a political add out here running that says we spend more on prisons than on education. Lying liars seem to be what teachers are now days.
I wonder if this teacher did the math based on a 40 hour work week and did not include holidays and summer vacation....
At $3 a day per student, you would make $83,000 a year. Now assuming you have 180 school days a year (that is about average), your math would indicate that you have around 153 students a day that go through your classes. That's around 26 students per class in a 6 class day.
Let's do a little math with that assumption. According to Education Week in their Jan 14th, 2010 issue, New Jersey spent $14,308 per pupil in 2007.
Now, with 153 Students going through your classes, we are looking at $2,189,124 in annual spending that you are looking at on a daily basis.
Now if we were to give you, and the other 5 teachers a day, the $83,000 a year that you wanted, that would be $498,000 a year in salaries.
Let's say there are 8 other assistant faculty members and staff members at the school who are paid 2/3 ($55,000) of what you would make out of these students tax worth. That would be another $440,000 in salaries.
Now let's say that half of the money spent on pupils in the State went to capital improvement and administration. That would be $1,094,562.
So: $1,094,562 + $440,000 + $498,000 = $2,032,562
Where is the extra $156,562?
That's 7% unaccounted for even after giving you and every other teacher $3 per pupil per day.
That's, at minimum, $1000 per pupil in missing revenue. And that, again, is after your demanded salary.
In a 6,000 student district, that's $6,000,000 that's ending up in someones pocket.
Here is my conclusion: Stop asking for more money from the State and start asking to see the books of your local district and union. I bet the money you need is just being wasted and embezzled.
These teachers don’t understand that the taxpayers pay their wages. A large number of us are out of work or working for a lot less than we could have or once did. Teachers cannot and should not expect that the rest of us should live on less, while they are exempt. Bottom line is that we can’t afford to pay for the extravagances as we once did. It’s time the teachers do their part and make some sacrifices too.
I see no reason why grades K - 12 would require more than a BA. They system is rigged so that teachers are not paid on merit but on degrees and time on job.
The whole system needs to be overhauled. There is so much wrong with our "educational" system that there is not room here to cover them all. But I think there are two things that should be done first that will fix the other.
1 - Take control of schools back from professional "educators" and 2 - Return the responsibility of schools back to the local community.
