Democrats "Bracing" For Loss in Hawaii CD-1 Special Election Today

Hawaii is holding a special election today in the 1st Congressional District to fill the seat vacated by Neil Abercrombie who resigned earlier this year to run for Governor.

Republicans believe they have a real shot of winning today with Charles Djou, who is actually leading in the latest polls against two Democrat candidates. Since the elections being held without a primary, all candidates are listed on the ballot, and it appears, the two main Democrats will split the vote sufficiently to allow Djou to win. There are 14 candidates in all on the ballot. Whoever gets the most votes wins, even if it is not a majority.

The vote is being conducted as a vote-by-mail election, so there are no polling places. All ballots have to be received by 6:00 pm today Hawaii time (Midnight ET) in order to be counted.

This is Obama's backyard. He carried the state with 72% of the vote. So a GOP win here would be a shot in the arm for Republicans, and an embarrassing blow for Obama. . .

He might, but the PA House election has shown us clearly what the union thugs can do ... We’ve been warned, and should not take that warning lightly.

Hawaii is splitting the donk vote, so ...

This can’t be good news. Clearly, the man is not perfectly conservative. Better if he loses so we won’t be disappointed in him later...(sarcasm)

Yeah but isn’t this seat only good for like 5 months? Wake me up when it is November.

Yeah, I think that’s right. They will have to run again in November.

And with some luck, old Neil the Trotskyite will lose in his bid to become High Commissar of Hawaii in November.

Latest polls have Djou at plurality leader at 36% in the three way race and the DCCC has left town for whatever reasons. Probably because former congressman Ed Case (who filled the late Patsy Mink's seat in a special election) came out to challenge Sen. Dan Akaka's seat in the subsequent election cycle. That was a big no-no, put himself in jeopardy for local and national DNC support for future bids.

Now.....the worst case scenario would be a tie between Djou and either of the other candidates forcing a runoff, then all bets are off.
