Waiting for bailouts and… Godot

Let us not waste our time in idle discourse! Let us do something, while we have the chance! It is not every day that we are needed. But at this place, at this moment of time, all mankind is us, whether we like it or not. Let us make the most of it, before it is too late!

It is not a Barack Obama quote – it is a classic in the Theater of the Absurd. It is part of the conversation of the two losers Waiting for Godot in the Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece.

The US spent trillions of dollars in bailouts… buying time… waiting for… what?

The debt clock is ticking while the actors in the political scene are arguing how much government we need. Do we feel better without the Gov, how much more bureaucracy can we take? It is like in the Beckett’s tragicomedy... Various members of the administration are trying really hard to make up good news, to point at a good sign, to pull some make-believe statistic out of their sleeves. Smoke and mirrors is the PR strategy to keep the impression that what is going on is sane and not just a Theater of the Absurd like this:

V: You must be happy too, deep down, if you only knew it…

E: We are happy. What do we do now, now that we are happy?

V: Wait for Godot. Things have changed here since yesterday.

E: And if he doesn’t come?

V: (after a moment of bewilderment). We’ll see when the time comes…
