The Krentz Bonfire
Tucson Weekly ^ | 4/29/2010 | Leo W. Banks

A little more than a month has passed since the death of Cochise County rancher Rob Krentz, and the emotion generated by his murder, the pure shock of it, has ignited a bonfire that still burns across Arizona's borderlands—and all the way to Washington, D.C.

Now everyone is demanding troops. Now, with Gov. Jan Brewer's signature on a tough new illegal-immigration law, the nation is embroiled in a loud debate about racial profiling. Now everyone has a multi-point plan for bringing some control to a border so porous that anyone who wants to get into the country can eventually do so, as Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever last week told the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Will anything change now?

When the bonfire cools, will we be able to look back and say, as the heartbroken Krentz family hopes, that Rob's death wasn't in vain?

This is an eminently fair article from an often very much left leaning publication. Although it's a little dated it touches on a subject that's becoming more and more heated though less and less covered by the MSM.

My understanding, from a source tangentially involved with the issue, of the Krentz murder is that he had found bales of pot on his ranch and called in the SO. He was later visited by “concerned investors” and instructed not to report any finds any more. When he found and reported another find the “concerned investors” decided to make a statement.

Whether the actual shooter is a US citizen or not is immaterial. The problem is with MEXICAN cartels and the illegal importation of people and drugs across the border.

This IS an illegal alien issue just as the lettuce pickers, the “Coyote’s” and the school children are. Those bales of dope Krentz found were not on their way into Mexico from Toledo. It was ILLEGAL CRAP flowing north across the border and we need to do everything we legally can to stop it.

The Feds simply cannot be relied upon to protect the border, enforce immigration law or protect the property rights of US citizens who live in the border region. They also cannot be relied upon to create and enforce laws which would serve to save hundreds of lives of people who die while crossing the border illegally. The government is trying very hard to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to illegal immigration hence they effectively do NOTHING.

SB 1070 is but one step in the right direction. If the Feds are not going to do their job then Arizonans must. Proper enforcement of our laws is a first step. We must also dramatically increase our physical presence on the border either with troops from the National Guard or with civilian volunteers. We must encourage our elected representatives to engage themselves in creating legislation which addresses the huge demand for temporary employment. We must strive to differentiate between those who choose to come here for seasonal or short term employment only and those who choose to come here to become Americans.

We must, above all else, make it known across the country that Arizonans are AMERICANS and that we will be the first in line to support the ideals that made this country great. We wholly support equal opportunities for all comers but sneaking across the desert in the dead of night isn’t “equal” and WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!!! We respect and encourage an entrepreneurial spirit but smuggling and dealing in ILLEGAL drugs will not be tolerated. Finally, if you choose to come here to live, we respect and embrace your cultural heritage but we have our own AMERICAN heritage which is built from the foundation of hundreds of different cultures and we deserve the respect of you putting the culture of AMERICA before that of your prior home.

If the Feds refuse to ignore the laws then we Arizonans should ignore paying our Federal Taxes. They are in breach of contract.

Almost any time you see Leo Banks's byline, you're going to get a good read.
