It appears Dr. James Dobson has switched his endorsement in the Kentucky GOP U.S. Senate primary from Trey Grayson to Rand Paul. He endorsed Grayson last week, but now says he was misled by "senior members of the GOP" to believe that Paul was not pro-Life. Dobson now says he knows that he is, and so he has switched his endorsement.
Here is the text of Dobson's statement:
Have you ever made an embarrassing mistake? I did just that last week. I was given misleading information about the candidacy of Dr. Rand Paul, who is running in the Republican Primary for the U.S. Senate. Senior members of the GOP told me Dr. Paul is pro-choice and that he opposes many conservative perspectives, so I endorsed his opponent.
But now I've received further information from OB/GYN's in Kentucky whom I trust, and from interviewing the candidate himself.
I now know that he is avidly pro life. He believes that life begins at conception.
He opposes earmarking and supports Israel. He identifies with the Tea Party movement and believes in home schooling. Sounds like my kind of man.
If I lived in Kentucky, I would vote for Dr. Rand Paul. Would you consider sending him to the U.S. Senate to shake things up in Washington?
Dobson had been convinced, by a fairly successful whisper campaign, that Rand Paul's libertarian approach to the abortion issue was more or less pro-choice. That's not what Paul has ever said, though; like his father he's anti-abortion rights but wants the issue decided in the states. And over the course of a week, the Paul campaign convinced Dobson on this point. It is stunning that Dobson was not more careful before making an endorsement in the race. But he has shown himself to be somewhat careless in political endorsements before, such as the way he trashed Sen. Fred Thompson during the 2008 Presidential Campaign, largely based on what he was told by others, and without having personal conversations with Thompson.
The other obvious question from this story is, "What "senior members of the GOP" misled Dobson?
Good news:
James Dobson endorses Rand Paul, apologizes for having previously backed his opponent

The Fall elections of 2010 are as much about defeating the GOP establishment (RINOs) as it is about defeating the Democrats.
If nothing else this proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Trey Grayson is a thoroughly dishonorable man.
It certainly seems this same “Leadership” is more closely aligned with the Obama Administration than they are with the Conservative base.
What? Misled by GOP elites? Now doesn’t THAT seem impossible!!!
John Cornyn should be removed from his leadership post.
Although Dobson does not mention Cornyn was the person who mis-imformed him, Cornyn had to know about the lie.
Cornyn has screwed up every primary he has touched.
Get rid of him.
If nothing else this proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the GOP is a thoroughly dishonorable organization.
That’s what A LOT of people on Free Republic DO NOT understand. The GOP is not as conservative as some people on this board believe. That is why our country is falling apart.
You know, I watched the movie “The Patriot”. It’s a fantastic movie, and inspiration to what I love about our country. We conservatives not only need to study the founding fathers, but educating everyone, including the GOP, of what our nation is about.
The GOP will keep slowly going to the left unless a conservative third party threatens their very existence (perhaps the Tea Party)? I hate it, but this must addressed.
Rand Paul has already betrayed us with his blame America rhetoric that apologizes to terrorists. To promote the Paul agenda would be a National Security disaster. Both Paul’s completely distort the position of the Founders.
How about a FReeper Party?
