Great show so far, but i t can’t compare to Band of Brothers.
I agree with this review. “The Pacific” has been portraying the Marines as emotionally conflicted, bitter, mentally unstable whiners. Essentially they have been portraying them much the same way that Hollywood likes to portray Vietnam soldiers.
His ship the Battleship USS Mississippi was part of the force that invaded Peleliu and Leyte and defeated a Japanese task force in the Battle of Surigao Strait. Mississippi provided gunfire support for the Lingayen landings in January 1945 and for the conquest of Okinawa. The battleship was damaged by suicide planes in both operations.
Marking.....
Marines are a breed apart, something Hanks clearly doesn't understand or show the same way Band of Brothers showed Airborne troops were a different. Another thing he doesn't understand is that after a while in combat, everyone is at least mentally walking wounded and not about to stop the occasional lunatic episode. Especially when the lunatic of the moment may have saved your life the day before and when you may be the lunatic tomorrow.
The first four episodes have been remarkably faithful to Leckie's book, which was published in 1957. They left out some little odds and ends, like how the Corps demanded he be circumsized before he was allowed to enlist.
Overall, and despite Hanks and his talking out the a$$ comments, the writers simply took Leckie, the author of 40 books, at his word, and didn't seem to have a standard Hollywood ax to grind. They didn't have to. Leckie told the truth about the Pacific, the Marines, and the Japanese. All the other research I've done, and the experience I've had, like dealing with stupid officers, makes the book entirely trustworthy.
That was supposed to read 500,000 as in half a million, and according to two sources.
I thought the show’s been garbage so far. I’ve barely developed any sort of attachment to the characters and the story is only so-so. Maybe others see more there, but it’s dull and routine compared to the “Band Of Brothers” series.
