Would we put OUR president on a russian plane? I mean before this one.
Ditto...
Actually it repeats what happened to General Sikorski in 1943.

Weren’t the pilots told to land somewhere else?
I don't know if I'd go that far. Aeroflot has retired them completely out of service.
Still looking for explanations of this. Fog or not, If the plane had a mechanical malfunction, it was going to attempt a landing.
I mean the pilot would attempt a landing...
The only thing that would convince me that it was a Russian assassination is if Russian tanks rolled into Warsaw.
The Russians would never be that obvious about it.
Adding to the confusion:
Polish plane crash: investigators rule out technical fault
Russian investigators have ruled out technical faults as the cause of the air crash which killed 96 people, including the Polish President Lech Kaczynski, and appeared to blame the Polish pilots for the tragedy.

The crew of Mr Kaczynski’s plane, who were all members of the Polish Air Force, were said by investigators to have ignored repeated warnings not to land in thick fog. They are now studying black box recordings to try to work out why the pilot did not divert to another airport.
Speaking at a meeting with the Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, who is in charge of the investigation, Russia’s chief investigator Alexander Bastrykin, said: “The recordings that we have confirm that there were no technical problems with the plane.

I highly recommend buying Russian planes for all of our elite in Washington DC! they have a GREAT safety record, comrade. Maybe Poland will sell us their remaining Tupelovs.
Out of curiosity, who reported the fuel dump? I’m gathering lots of interesting tidbits by different news reports and a lot of it makes no sense. Such as there apparently is no instrument approach into Smolensk, the runway was very short for that type of airplane (hence the fuel dump?), the spot where the accident occurred was at the end of runway 9. Did the jet clip the trees before or after executing the go-around? I heard it crashed at 8 meters where it should have been at 60. Didn’t the pilot get an inflight report about the heavy fog at the airport? How far in advance did he know about the fog? Seems to be the Polish to pofficials would have a very experienced (military?) pilot.
Any experienced/professional pilots here who can comment or is there another thread somewhere where all this gets discussed? I am very interested in the facts and wonder how much of that we will get from the local authorities.
I don’t believe Russia yet has a GPS system, do they?
The plane was over 40 yrs old, what kind of navigation system did it have? How updated was the auto-pi?
I think the article over estimates the sophistication of the aircraft & the airport invovled.
I wonder why they were all in such a POS plane in the first place. Was this plane an official Polish owned plane or was it provided them by Russia for this visit?
No need for that, Tusk is Putin’s best buddy and now the leader of Poland. So in one fell swoop, Russia has a pro-Russian leader of a European Union nation.
Somehow I would doubt even tanks rolling into Warsaw would convince you.
