Top al Qaeda leader linked to 5 Americans on trial in Pakistan
By BILL ROGGIO
April 17, 2010 4:42 PM
Pakistani prosecutors claim that five Americans currently on trial for attempting to join al Qaeda were in contact with a top leader of the terror group.
The five Americans are said to have made contact with Qari Saifullah Akhtar, the leader of the radical Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami and the commander of al Qaedas Brigade 313. Prosecutors presented evidence, including phone calls, emails, and other documents that linked Akhtar and the five would-be terrorists, according to Dawn.
Akhtar recruited the five Americans after watching their videos posted on YouTube, according to Pakistani police officials. Akhtar was able to obtain emails through the YouTube postings and encouraged the men to travel to Pakistan to join the jihad.
The five American Muslim men were detained in the city of Sargodha in Punjab province in December 2009 after a family member discovered they were missing and contacted the FBI. The five Americans have been identified as Umar Farooq, Waqar Hussain, Rami Zamzam, Ahmad Abdullah Mini, and Amman Hassan Yammer.

Pakistan Dawn: “An intolerant nation”
— Dawn: “We are reaping the harvest of the seeds of hatred sown in the seventies and eighties. Pakistan is becoming an increasingly intolerant nation where religious and sectarian minorities live in fear and are awarded little or no protection by the state.”
— “Difference is unacceptable to the obscurantists who want everyone to toe their line. And if that takes intimidation, torture or even murder, then so be it, for no option is unavailable to the self-righteous who believe that they alone have seen the light.”
— “This mindset is not limited to the Taliban who kill in the name of religion. There is no shortage in Pakistan of sectarian and other militant outfits that feel justified in murdering Shias, Christians and Ahmadis or indeed anyone who doesnt share their views.”

Malmö: A quarter of Swedish-born students aren’t seen as Swedes
More than a quarter of students born or raised in Sweden aren’t seen as Swede, according to a study by Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan of seniors in some of Malmö’s gymnasium schools.
To be born or raised in Sweden doesn’t mean that people treat you like a Swede.
A large ratio of youth who took their final examinations at St. Petri school, Malmö Borgar school, Malmö latin school, Rönnen’s gymnasium and Klara Nya Gymnasium are treated as immigrants.
“[If] you have the wrong color and wrong name, you’ll never be treated as a Swede,” wrote one of the respondents.
“I’m a foreigner both in Sweden and in my homeland,” answers a student who wrote he was born in Sweden.
More than 600 seniors at the St. Petri school, Malmö Borgar school, Malmö latin school, Rönnen’s gymnasium and Klara Nya Gymnasium answered Sydsvenskan’s survey. The schools have 1,041 students. In total there are 3,000 final-year students in Malmö.
Of the 600, 551 said they were born in Sweden, or came to the country before they were 7. Here are their answers:
* 28.2% aren’t treated as Swedes at all.
* 23% answered that they’re treated as immigrants.
* 5.2% are treated as something else, for example ‘foreigners’, ‘Blatte’ (non-Europeans) or ‘Arabs’.
* 11.6% are treated as both immigrants and Swedes.
* 1.2% are treated as something else and Swede.
* 59% are treated as Swedes. “I’m Polish, but I’m treated as a Swede,” wrote one of them.

South Korean ship sunk by crack squad of ‘human torpedoes’
The Telegraph ^ | April 22, 2010 | Julian Ryall
Posted on April 22, 2010 6:15:55 AM PDT by myknowledge
The attack on the 1,220-ton Cheonan, which sank on March 26 with the loss of 46 of its 104 crew, was carried out in retaliation for a skirmish between warships of the two nations’ navies in November of last year, South Korea claims.
The South Korean government has refused to comment officially on the reports but Defence Minister Kim Tae Young told a parliamentary session that the military believed that the sinking was a deliberate act by North Korea.
Officials in military intelligence say they warned the government earlier this year that North Korea was preparing a suicide-squad submarine attack on a South Korean ship.
“Military intelligence made the report to the Blue House [the presidential office] and to the Defence Ministry immediately after the sinking of the Cheonan that it was clearly the work of North Korea’s military,” a military source said.

TRAVEL WARNING [NIGER]
TRAVEL.STATE.GOV - United States Department of State - Bureau of Consular Affairs ^ | May 11, 2010 | n/a

Travel Warning United States Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs Washington, DC 20520
This information is current as of today, Wed May 12 2010 23:23:37 GMT-0700 (PDT).
NIGER
May 11, 2010
The Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Niger and recommends against all travel to the north of the country due to kidnapping threats against Westerners.
Al-Qaida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), a terrorist group, continues its attempts to kidnap Westerners, including U.S. citizens in Niger, and has been successful in kidnapping Europeans in the region. On April 20, a French citizen was kidnapped by a group affiliated with AQIM in a location west of Agadez. In November 2009, heavily armed individuals attempted to kidnap U.S. embassy officials in Tahoua.
Due to these ongoing security threats, Embassy Niamey continues to restrict the travel of U.S. government employees and official visitors in areas north of Niamey, and warns U.S. citizens to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant.
Although the U.S. government places the highest priority on the safe recovery of kidnapped U.S. citizens, it is U.S. policy not to make concessions to kidnappers.
All U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Niger are urged to register with the Department of State or the U.S. Embassy in Niamey through the State Department’s travel registration website.
