Apple’s Plan to Conquer the World
Pajamas Media ^ | April 6 | Charlie Martin

Posted on 04/06/2010 12:16:33 PM PDT by AJKauf

The Apple iPad was released over weekend, and there was tremendous publicity and no small amount of punditry on the topic. Of course, as is only fitting for something released on Easter weekend, the Apple fans have said it’s the greatest thing ever, about to change the whole market, and no doubt going to raise the dead, heal the sick, and make the lame whole. Naturally, there are also the naysayers, a lot of whom have concentrated on how the iPad can’t possibly live up to the hype. In particular, they noted that the iPad isn’t going to save the magazine publishing industry because, as one research report put it (in all caps in the original):

Even if iPads fly off the shelves magazines will still only realize a small percent of their overall print revenue.

So let’s cut through the hype for a few minutes. Yes, I do think the iPad is a pretty terrific device. (I should have a review of my first experiences with one in the next couple of days.) It’s not something unexpected, though — it’s really the first halting steps toward the “next computer” I predicted two years ago in one of my first pieces in Pajamas Media. It will change the world of computing, maybe as much as Google did, but don’t depend on it to raise the dead or even cure your cold....

PING this over to the one who does posts on Apple computers.

Ummmm... I do posts on Apple Macintosh and Apple products -- but -- you're probably talking about Swordmaker...

Funny how I’ve managed to get through life without ever buying an Apple product. I guess I don’t know how empty my life really is.

My sincerely offered condolences, then ... :-)

Shhhh, cost is no object to the iZombies. You'll get called a communist for daring to suggest that Apple's products are priced beyond what average people can afford.

Well, if the public is buying them (like the wildly successful iPhone, too...) and you're not -- then I would say we know whose budget this is "priced beyond" ... LOL ...

But I expect Apple will go back to the drawing board and produce a second generation that fixes the things their customers are complaining about.

One nice thing about iPad, which is just like the iPhone and the iPod Touch -- is -- the "upgrades" are merely a "download away" -- and you have all the newest features (and "buttons") that Apple has improved on.

It's so slick to get a virtually "new piece of hardware" -- by merely doing a download and nothing more.

Dude, people pay what they can afford. Who am I to deny them the pleasure? Who are you? At the Saturday morning farmer’s market people pay twice the prices I pay in my local produce market, which had purchased its produce earlier that morning from other farmers somewhere at a wholesale farmer’s market in the Big City.

What a juvenile argument. Should I consider myself insulted for having a family that requires me to make choices about what I want verses what I need? Yes indeed, I can't afford to drop $600+ on something I have no use for, so if that makes me a lesser man in your eyes, I'm OK with that.

Yeah, downloading a flat finish screen, a USB port, grip surface backing is gonna work really well.

Well, I've always found it very humorous for people to say that they wouldn't buy thus and such -- when the truth of the matter is that they couldn't do it even if they wanted to ... LOL ...

Well, I guess you're unhappy with that toaster of yours, since you can't open cans with it, huh? LOL ...

I think what you're talking about is called a "computer" ... like in a laptop or desktop. I've got one of those, too, ya know... (actually both) ... :-)

But, I've got an iPhone, too -- and -- I'll be getting an iPad, but first I've got another laptop coming, doncha know ...

Aside from cultivating an attitude of snobbery and arrogance, there's certainly plenty to admire about Apple from a business perspective.

Funny how that attitude always winds up on display on these threads too.

They're not my complaints. Since I don't own one I've got nothing to complain about. These are some of the complaints I've read that the people who have purchased the iPad are making.

Yeah, I've seen some threads posted by those who "would never buy one" and so they list a bunch of these "complaints" on a thread.

Then along come those who have bought them, and they say it's fantastic and an amazing device.

Now, compared to those who say they would "never buy anything Apple" who then go on to list all the "complaints" that they have -- versus -- the ones who have actually bought them, and don't have complaints, I know which ones I would listen to... :-)

I call them "nattering nabobs of negativity" and we see them "come in" all the time on threads saying "I would never buy that" -- when all the others on the thread are saying what good experience they've had from those devices that they actually do own ... :-)

It's certainly beneficial to make sure you're listening to a valid opinion based up an actual review of the product. But that's what I was talking about; reviews of the product from published sources. Anyone can make any claim on a FR thread, so it behooves one to use a few grains of salt with any claim on a thread.

I have no use for an iPad, iMac, or iPhone so that would be a poor use of my funds. An iTouch on the other hand I would love, my wife and daughter both have one. So please don't include me in the "N.N.of Negativity" crowd.

Well..., you probably don't know the very long history of Macintosh users finding that many of these so-called experts that "review" things for Macintosh (who are actually Windows users, themselves and they don't even understand Macintosh at all...) -- they give reviews that are nutty and crazy.

I've been used to that over the years and have realized that many of these "pundits" simply don't know what they're talking about in what makes the Macintosh (and other Apple products so successful with the average consumer). They're totally "lost" in understanding that -- and -- they are "so amazed" that people keep buying the Apple products in great numbers.

They are "mystified" by it -- and the only explanation that they can come up with -- is -- the "Apple promotion machine" is so powerful that it makes people believe things that aren't true ... LOL ...

No..., this is the situation with these guys... it's ridiculous... :-)

That's why when you talk to a Macintosh user or an Apple product user, you get good information, but you get a whole lot of garbage from the "pundits"....

It's a "very long history" of those "reviewers" doing this -- of over a decade and more, I would say. It's amazing that anyone keeps reading what they say about Apple or Macintosh.

BUT, the nice thing about having all these Apple Retail Stores is that Apple puts out these products on the shelves (and tables there) and they expect you to really "use them" in the store and run them through their paces. They expect you to really "get your hands on the product". I remember when the iPhone came out and you could make calls all over the place (while in the store) and try it out on one person and another person and call anywhere in the country to "test it out" and use all the features of the phone, to the very last thing...

That's what Apple is good about. You can really get your hands all over their products...

Okay... :-) ... I won't include you in the nattering nabobs of negativity crowd then ...

You like the iPod Touch and that's great. Of course, just about the only difference between it and the iPhone is the "phone part" but there is quite a bit there that makes things real convenient, too. And it's great to have the Internet anywhere, besides just at WiFi locations.

And I don't think it's any kind of Game Changer in the world of computing, either. It's a pretty gizmo that lands somewhere between the iPhone and a tablet PC. I just happen not to believe the world of computing was screaming for that void to be filled. We shall see.

The importance isn't what it does, it's how it does it. Think UI, not form factor.
