Deterrence is the art of producing in the mind of the enemy... the FEAR to attack. And so, because of the automated and irrevocable decision-making process which rules out human meddling, the Doomsday machine is terrifying and simple to understand... and completely credible and convincing.
Of course, the whole point of a Doomsday Machine is lost, if you *keep* it a *secret*!

Eh, WT Hell, we have our own APril Fool in the WhiteHouse.
It probably works by subjecting the enemy to a debate of philosophers. Much like the Monty Python skit about famous philosophers playing in a football match.
Quantum mechanics philosophers could argue that the enemy is both dead and alive simultaneously.
The whole experience could be so mind-numbing that the enemy would die of boredom.
There have been novelizations many years ago of horizon wide image projectors by camouflaged aircraft combined with a broadcast systems so far beyond the even more powerful rock concerts to display images of deities or of religious nature in a foreign country.
Evey continent and culture has its historical deities of worship, whip up a program of Vishnu at night in India and you would get millions in a terrified obedient euphoria.
Imagine to voice of Allah heard for hundreds of miles with atmospheric images in the middle east.
If any country can leap ahead in technology its the somewhat isolationist Japan.
