Hardened Hearts

Hebrews 3:12-14, “Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, as long as it is called “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.”

I have been very upset lately by some of the comments readers have left on our newspaper, specifically from an article about a Facebook initiative that encouraged Christians to pray for an atheist. The atheists have come out in droves to profess the simplemindedness of Christian faith. Most of them compared our belief to Jesus Christ as “having an imaginary friend” or comparing Jesus to Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or the tooth fairy. They simply believe that since they don’t have any scientific proof they can agree with that God exists, they are too far intellectually superior to believe in such nonsense, implying we’re not the sharpest knives in the drawer. Of course, sometimes real faith does look plain nutty to the world. We aren’t supposed to be of this world, conforming to what it believes is right anyway. Are we?
