TT 30s are the same caliber and are about the same price.

Good advice, and there are some good deals on weapons to be had out there. Local used gun websites can be an excellent place to pick up an extra 12 GA, or another 30.06; something that uses the common ammunition you should already have stocked in quantity. Lots and lots of good, clean handguns are out there too, it just takes a little bit of looking. When the rubber meets the road it would be nice to make sure that guy next to you has something besides his Johnston in his hand... That's why I wrote it, thanks for "getting" it.

Ive wanted a 12 ga saiga carbine for a while. Someone markets eight and ten shot magazines for them too.

They may be “converted” after a few neighbors are murdered by bandits. And that still leaves the widows etc. unarmed.

As John Steinbeck once said, "Never pick a fight with an old man. If he's too old to fight, he'll just kill ya'." Words to live by. Or in the words of ExSoldier: "I'm too young to die, and I'm too old to fight fair."

Man, I sure hope it never turns into Detroit or Memphis around where I live.
If it does, I’m on the Escape Pod and outta here.

I just picked up three Hi-Point 9mm pistols specifically for the purpose arming friends/relatives. They were $250 apiece brand new; theyre easy to use, tough as hell, and reliable.See? There you go. I'm not coming up with something new, I'm just writing it down first. This is a "meme" already.

When the time comes, you three might make a damn tight little triangle of mutual defense.

I’m not even suggesting you arm sheeple now or anytime soon. I’m suggesting you buy extra guns now in anticipation of sheeple being converted in the dire-extremes future, when guns may be unavailable. And only lending them guns even then when you are SURE of their conversion.

I can’t think of a better or more fun pistol for $200. If there was one, I’d buy it! The fact it goes through cars and soft body armor makes it fill a special niche too.

Yes, very true. You might end up hosting friends or relatives who arrive with nothing, after losing their homes due to various reasons.

You mean Tokarevs? Never cared for them, but they do go “bang” and are cheap.

Yep. I had a character use a Mosin Nagant for “social development” in my first novel. Under $200, scoped, to hit a 10# paper plate target at 600 yards is a damn good bargain.

The Toks fit my hand better than a CZ52 and they seem to kick a bit less. I think they are both good deals. It is hard to go wrong for that price point as long as it goes bang reliably and doesn’t blow up.

GMTA, Matt. $:-) I've had this covered for some time now, although most folks where I live are already fairly well set on their own, I'm glad to say!

I read the book and it got me interested in them. That is when I started looking into Mosins. They are a blast to shoot, very powerful and cheaper than anything else going to buy. My sons and I have gotten to like them. I have a couple of them laying around, pretty much for the reason you suggested.
To: wtc911
the mags for the ruger P-95 also fit that carbine, in case you have one of those pistols.
To: Travis McGee
Thanks for the interesting perspective, Matt. You make some good points. I may start taking guest along to shoot more often.
Consider why tiny Switzerland has never been invaded by its much more powerful and often bellicose neighbors. Its not because of the Alps. Its because the Swiss have a strong tradition of armed self-defense at every level. Both invading armies and criminal gangs go around hard targets that are known to shoot back!
I love the quote (perhaps a fiction for all I know, but I like the attitude) attributed to a Swiss politician or diplomat when he was told by his German counterpart that the German army alone had twice as many people as the entire population of Switzerland. The Swiss guy said "Then we'll each have to shoot twice."

if someone paid $250 for a high point handgun they got taken.
