Our environment has grown so toxic that more and more people are requiring medical care at much higher frequencies. To the contrary ... our environment has grown so clean that classic mortal diseases are giving way to previously obscured oddities and novel ends at older ages. Social Security itself was enacted on the theory that few would ever reach age 65, and is now buckling under the weight of most elderly using it as a long-term retirement plan. Medical care has gone from focusing on acute crises to a domination of preventative care - and that involving extensive use of expensive leading-edge high-tech. Many maladies suffered now stem from immune systems unused to environmental stresses. Couple that with an insurance system designed to promote early & extensive treatment fast while leveraging shared expenses to absorb increased "spike" and overall costs.
You're welcome to return to the old days of "duct tape & aspirin", and see where "toxic" really fits in.
(Yeah, troll/zot I know. Just like responding to popular misconceptions.)

Having healthcare may have been a luxury in years past but it's an absolute necessity today. Apparently there is now a whole generation of those that believe they are entitled to what their neighbors earned. That's not need, it's greed.
