University Researchers Discover Denial

Malcolm A. Kline, March 12, 2010

Once again, university researchers have gone to great lengths, and expense, to learn something that less credentialed Americans have known for generations. “Researchers say that some anti-binge drinking public service announcements have an opposite effect,” Sara Schwartz reports in The Washington Examiner. “Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management says that public service ads intended to reduce binge drinking are actually leading to more of it.”

“The university performed a five-part study in which researchers showed anti-alcohol ads to 1,200 undergrads and interviewed them afterward.” They could have saved themselves the trouble....

There’s an ad on tv in MA that has guys driving around in cars filled with beer that cascades out when they roll the window down to talk to the cop who has pulled him over. The first time we saw it at the local watering hole we all laughed our asses off. Included in this group were several local cops, some CO’s and the sheriff.

Here's an interesting little story:

Many years ago, teaching Biology at Mackenzie High School in Detroit, the Prinicpal decided that we would have a 'Clean Up the School Grounds' day. Now the place was Litter Ground Zero. An absolute disgrace.

I suggested that instead of cleaning up the school grounds they should have the DPW dump their trash trucks until the rotting garbage covered the second floor and obliterated all entrances.

My idea was that once kids had to literally fight their way through tons of garbage to get into school to learn they would would also learn a lesson regarding littering,... better than a couple of minutes spent picking up trash.

Principal then tried to have me fired. Didn't work.

The anti-alcohol ads and the ads to sell alcohol have in common playing upon the guilts and fears of the drinker so it's little wonder the effect is similar. But this has been known for a very long time and exploited by the ad industry.

“Drink Responsibly” says the ad. Anyone out there drinking irresponsibly? Didn't think so, bottoms up!

Well, maybe that guy (women don't drive drunk, right?) with booze sloshing out the car window but he's not a “Responsible Drinker” like the rest of us and man! am I glad those flashing lights went around me tonight!
