Sorry, never had to provide either, not even for my first job. Of course, that was as an Ensign in the Navy and since I went through ROTC the government already knew my grades and my graduation status. But for every civilian job since then all I’ve ever had to provide was the I-9 info.

My father and brothers were electrical engineers for subcontractor providing services to NASA. This was in the 60s. Every thread of their lives was combed with a fine tooth comb. The investigators even interviewed old class mates, colleagues, neighbors, family, and friends.

And...Yes, school transcripts, certified copies of long form birth certificates, and passports were thoroughly review and verified. It took several months for their clearances to be processed.
But...Hey! We're one of the unanointed Americans.
