This Isn't Eugenics ... No, Wait!

Any allusion to present-day biomedical practices as being eugenic usually leads to quite hysterical denials and the accusation of painting with an inappropriate Nazi brush.

I've heard all the arguments, so please spare me: The only people who were Nazis were the Nazis. The only things that are eugenic are what the Nazis did in the interests of breeding a more superior race. Genetic research in this day and age is an absolutely cutting-edge, wonderful, and very necessary ethical endeavor.

The howling eugenics deniers will even concede that eugenics didn't originate in Nazi Germany (the U.S. and the U.K. have that distinction), and, if pressed, that some prominent historical figures supported eugenics (Margaret Sanger and Winston Churchill among them). But that's as far as it goes.

I have no argument with parents who are genetically tested and decide not to take the risk of reproducing children who might have some form of genetic disability.

The author himself might not have an argument, but many liberals did have an argument with Sarah Palin because she chose to reproduce a child certain that it had a form of genetic disability. That tells us virtually all we need to know about modern progressives whom we used to call liberals. It tells me all I need to know about the visceral hatred Sarah Palin aroused in a class we now once again in our history call "progressives" merely by her decision to carry a baby to term knowing that it had down syndrome.

Of course liberals-I mean progressives, don't admit to this, rather they shriek in indignation when they are accused of it but there can be no other explanation for their mindless loathing of Sarah Palin, a loathing which surpasses mere political difference of opinion.

Why is this so, why do the liberals hate her so just because she declined to practice eugenics? Because her action was a reproach to them and threatened what they cherish most: the unquestioned, unfettered prerogative to play God. There is no single thing man (or in this case, woman) can do which more arrogates the power of God then the power to grant or withhold life. Hence there shrieking adherence to abortion.

"Eugenicist is just another name for "God player."

My concern regarding genetic tests done during gestation on amniotic fluid are that there seem to many cases where they are not accurate...the child is born full term without any problems whatsoever. Adults who are tested on the other hand, can take steps if they so choose not to reproduce.

Genetic testing is a crock of crap that gets used as a crutch for people to justify killing a child in utero.

What's the point of knowing the probable possibility of a child getting some genetically determined disease? That knowledge is useless to me if God-forbid one of my children suffers from that disease. I'd much rather have medicine focus on treating these diseases instead.

If people with potentially damaged genes were having themselves tested, and then sterilized or otherwise disposed of if such genes were found, it would be an entirely different matter.

The "killer docs" would be just as happy though. Some of them would get to kill again!

Furthermore the risk to child may be increased simply by taking those tests

Liberals/Progressives want state mandated standards of perfection. They want full control of everything and everyone. It is always the desire of tyrants to impose their vision/will upon world.

Exactly.

Great post, as always.

Thank you for the kind words but I am somewhat embarrassed at my proofreading skills. Or rather my inattention in proofreading. Dragon NaturallySpeaking software sometimes does not know the difference between "their" and "there" and "they're." I do know the difference but you would never know that from my proofreading.
