I've just heard from an impeccable source that Barbara Mikulski, the Democratic Senator who is up for reelection this November, will choose to retire. Mrs. Mikulski is expected to make her formal announcement in the next few days.
Mrs. Mikulski seriously fractured her right ankle last fall just prior to Edward M. Kennedy's death. Due to the severity of the fracture, she had to have open reduction surgery, that included the insertion of pins, as well as the use of special surgical boots, during recovery. She had tried to arrive in time for Mr. Kennedy's funeral but was turned away.
Her recovery has been exceptionally slow and she is evidently still in a great deal of pain. Reportedly, she has told her physician that she does not desire to seek reelection. Additionally, friends and family have been saying in the near future she will announce her retirement. Because of the very slow recovery, she has been forced to use a wheelchair, a walker or a cane in order to get around.
One of her complaints is that the health insurance that is provided for Congress is "poor" with high deductibles and "limitations" on coverage. My contact tells me that she told an aide that she should have inserted in the ObamaCare bill an amendment to improve Congressional health insurance! Mrs. Mikulski was first elected to the Senate in 1986, and thus is a very senior member of the Democratic caucus. Despite this seniority, she has never been offered any important chairmanships or leadership positions. Born on July 20, 1936, she is 74 years old, come July...it is perhaps fitting that she has choose this year to retire.
Her possible announcement along with that of Evan Bayh and Byron Dorgan of ND will the third Democratic Senator announcing plans to retire.

As a resident prisoner in the Peoples Republic of Maryland I welcome this news heartily. To my knowledge it’s been a couple of generations since there was even a GOP senator, much less a good one. Charles Mathias was a lefty egghead IIRC. Unfortunately for the sane, Commiesymps need to win only three jurisdictions to take the state; The Peoples’ Republic of Baltimore, The Peoples’ Republic of Montgomery County (which makes Berkeley seem sorts mainstream) and The Peoples’ Republic of Prince George’s County, were alas I reside.
Twice we had a wondrous candidate for Governor (Ellen Sauerbray, a Reaganite)who stormed through the rest of the state about 60/40 and lost these three. She lost 55/44. Bob Erhlich would be better, but then Lenin may be better than Babs.
In the land of Federal bureaucrats, there is no hope for conservatism.
Mr. Steele could probably take this seat.
No pictures of those ol'gals.
Right at the end of 1977, when I was 35, I broke my left foot and ankle in a serious fall. Just like the senator, I required an open reduction. It was over three months before I could walk again and, even now, I have only about 25% of the motion in that ankle that I had before. All in all, a real bummer. For Mikulski, at 74, it must be pure Hell. Add to that the fact that she would have faced a severe challenge, and it’s easy to see why she’s likely to retire.
He seems to have some sort of difficulty standing up to that segment of Maryland's Democrat party (well, it's more than a segment ~ they are the majority).
The way the Democrats select candidates it's probably some black guy in PG county who is in line for the opportunity to be a Senator. There are several likely candidates there and we'll be hearing about them in a couple of weeks.
I heard somewhere that he was thinking about running for Gov again but the polls had him down quite a bit. of course that was a few months ago so God knows what it looks like at this point in time. If Mikulski does retire i hope this becomes a surprise GOP pickup. the more we take in “blue” territory this year the better
lol that was my first thought. Gee, maybe we can get rid of Steele by encouraging him to run.
I’ll wait and see if this pans out. The complaints about her congressional health insurance don’t sound right.
No, but Michael Steele might be an ok choice.
100cms. and 100kgs. of pure and immitigated stupidity. At least she gave us a standard definition for that quantity.
BTTT
Maybe it was a tie-in to someone she also murdered by drowning.
Holy crappola, this is GREAT news!

Enter Coats. Exit Bayh. Bye, bye, Bayh!
The first time Evan Bayh gets a serious race for re-election, he quits!

Eric Wargotz is certainly gonna try...
Pelosi was elected by the House Rat caucus. She then picks the other leaders and chairs. The seniority system was once very important but is now pretty much gone.
Something is definitely up that they don’t want to be a part of. This is all very strange.
Are boob belts a lesbian thing? /just asking
Oh, well ... certainly are more positions to be had in the new “Fat Czarina’s” cabinet.
LMAO! I hope she knows a tiny boob belt makes her waist look tiny.
