When Democracy fails
NY Post ^ | February 14, 2010 | REED TUCKER

You don’t have to be a C-SPAN junkie to see that our government is just plain broken. You get the feeling that more substantial work gets accomplished at a high school’s model UN.

But what if it’s not just government that’s broken? What if democracy itself doesn’t work? After watching “Jaywalking,” or, God help us all, an episode of “Jersey Shore,” it’s hard to argue that We the People are best equipped to make the important decisions of state. As Winston Churchill once said, “The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”

Democracy is not the problem. An uneducated population brought to believe they are owed everything is the problem. Progressives have done their job well.

“The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”

Post #4 by backhoe says it as well as it need be said.

I would add that the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, nor any of the Constitution's of the fifty states contains the word "democracy".

This is not by accident.

James Madison, rightly known as the Father of the Constitution wrote in essay number ten of the Federalist papers, “Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths”.

Alexander Hamilton agreed and he stated, “We are a Republican Government. Real liberty is never found in despotism or in the extremes of democracy”.

Samuel Adams, signer of the Declaration of Independence, stated, “Democracy never last long. It soon waste, exhaust, and murders itself”.

It’s worked for 200+ years and I see no reason for it not to contunue to work. We do need to cut the governemnt size by at least 1/2 and cut the spending by about the same rate.
