Other than the Houston livestock and Rodeo the city is a waste of land.
Austin and San Antonio, New Braunfuls, are wonderful.
El Paso is also a pit.

I do not live there but have been to both cities. I prefer Dallas area. If you drive a few miles to Fort Worth, the people there do not think people in Dallas are real Texans.

Check out San Antonio also. A delightful city which offers much, within a short drive to Austin, and near the Hill Country and other things foreign to your previous location.

Climate is good, and people are fabulous.

if you can afford to live in the better parts of either city you should do it. That said the bad part of Houston is worse than the bad part of Dallas. There are more “ok” areas around dallas that you could commute to work from.

Lived here all my life, apart from 20 months and 3 days in Los Angeles, and got back as soon as I could. Yes, I love it here and wouldn’t live anywhere else.

Lived in both Houston and Dallas. Depends on what you think is fun. Houston has it all over Dallas in cultural and performing arts. Dallas is a sports town. But you’ll find the yee-haw/dancing/club stuff in both cities.

Have you looked into Austin or San Antonio? You’re young enough to get a kick out of Austin, and we need Freepers there.

I don't know about Houston, but I'd avoid Dallas. I have a house there near downtown that I tried to sell for two years and finally had to rent. I'm being reamed on property taxes because the city government is run by a bunch of corrupt idiots who spend billions on high-profile show projects and graft and not a penny on little things like filling potholes, preventing floods, maintaining parks and enforcing zoning laws.

I now live in the suburbs between Dallas and Ft. Worth. As long as you stay out of Dallas proper or south Dallas, you'll probably be fine. There are lots of great little suburbs and small towns close enough to DFW to enjoy the city's amenities without actually having to deal with the corrupt morons who run Dallas. If you're looking to go where the jobs and money are, look just north of Dallas, to the Richardson-Plano-McKinney area.

I do not live in Texas but have been there many times for training with the Air Force. I am a big fan of San Antonio, the riverwalk is beautiful. I also have been to Fort Worth a few times and have to say that I would probably move there if I were going to move to Texas. Downtown Fort Worth is very clean and there are many things to do. TCU is close so it is young and vibrant. Fort Worth also has the Stockyard area where you can eat a steak, drink some beer and watch cattle as they are driven through the street.( only in Texas)

I’ve been offered the opportunity to transfer out of Texas many times (ironically, one of the places was just outside of Chicago- Schaumburg) but I can’t leave Texas. Not only is it not cost effective (I was offered over 50% increase in pay to move to Schaumburg and I still feel I would not have broken even with the higher cost of living, house prices, and taxes).

Depending on where you live, the cost of living can be much lower. Most of Texas the economic climate is great, we haven’t really been hit by the recession very hard.

Regarding taxes, we have the second lowest per-capita tax rate in the country (that includes property tax) so that is a big plus.

I would vote for Dallas to live in myself, but I’m sure many others would disagree. The people are nicer and the traffic is much better.

I love Texas much more than my birth state. Once you get Texas on you you can’t get rid of it. It becomes part of your soul....DALLAS DALLAS DALLAS hands down, DALLAS. The weather in H-town is horrid, and the politics is much wose than Dallas. Our economy has be fairly stable with slight impact to housing prices, but more so to the job market. You can’t go wrong moving to Dallas, or the DFW area...

While I don’t quite fit your profile (I’m a native Texan), I urge you to consider Austin. Dallas and Houston are just too big and fast, while Austin enjoys a more convivial culture than either of those two.

Full disclosure, I was born and raised in Ft. Worth (possibly too podunk for you, but they have surprisingly good museums) and I did live in Plano, which you can hardly distinguish from N. Dallas anymore. Also, I lived in San Diego for 9 years and loved it; now reside outside of Austin.

All I know is that unemployment is presently less bad in Texas than most other places.

The three big cities in Texas are blue: Austin, Dallas, Houston. The suburbs are red, so Plano/Richardson for Dallas, Woodlands/Sugarland for Houston.

Austin needs to be nuked.

El Paso is a liberal dump in a New Mexico sort of way, as I should know, being a New Mexican.

San Antonio is liberal, but in a Hispanic sort of way with good surrounding towns.

For a city of any size that is conservative, it would be Ft. Worth, then Midland, then Abiliene (the last two being smallish, but rich).

The economy is fine (about 5% unemployment) in Midland.

You will get about 500% more house in Texas (anywhere but Austin or University Park/Highland Park in Dallas or River Oaks in Houston) than Chicago.

1. Do you like Texas better than your former state

Coming from NY state thats a no brainer. Been here in DFW area since '83. Although hot here in summers I like it here. Was able to allocate a lot more toward retirement savings than if living back in NY where the taxes and overpriced cost of living would have taken more and left me with less.
