Robert Ott, the CEO of the Claim Jumper restaurant chain does not believe ordinary citizens have the right to protect themselves and their families under the rights conferred by the Second Amendment of the US Constitution. This is the letter sent to Robert Ott by T. Mark Graham (AKA Gunplumber) owner of Arizona Response Systems, a small firearms manufacturing company. Read the letter at the link and forward to friends and family.

Somehow, “Claim Jumpers” seems appropriate for a business that would prohibit a patron’s right to self-defense.

Too bad. I used to get an Oar Cart (three-animal dinner) at Claim Jumpers with my friends when we were doing business in San Diego.

I take it no employee would be allowed to keep a gun on premises in case of robbery. Isn’t Claim Jumpers publicizing how simple it would be to rob one of their outlets? Another stupid ultralib business to boycott.

I sent my own email to robert_ott@claimjumper.com.

“Dear Mr. Ott,

My wife and I will no longer be able to dine at Claim Jumper restaurants. We have been patronizing your restaurants for approximately 20 years. We especially enjoy the restaurant in Redmond although the Restaurant in Tukwila is closer to our home. I work as a Hazmat Fire Lieutenant and my wife is a nurse and has worked at Retirement Center and Nursing Homes for many years as an activity director. For our entire married life I have worked with my wife as a volunteer bus driver and on many occasions we have taken groups of Senior Citizens to Claim Jumper on outings. We also have enjoyed dining at Claim Jumper restaurants for birthdays, anniversaries and other special events and family get-togethers.

Both of us have Concealed Weapons Permits and regularly carry pistols for our own protection and the protection of those who we are responsible for. We have completed safety and defense courses and practice regularly at the gun club that we belong to. We take the added responsibilities we have when carrying our guns very seriously.

We have been victim’s of violent crime in the past. I work with the police on a daily basis and understand their limitations. The police cannot be responsible for the safety of everyone all the time. Because of limited budgets... long response times are frequent in our area.

Studies and personal experience have shown us that the fear of concealed weapon permit holders is an effective deterrent to violent crime. For example we know that in National Parks, where weapons have been banned, the incidence of violent crime is often many times greater than surrounding areas. So even on the occasions when we are not carrying our weapons with us; we still will not feel comfortable patronizing your restaurants. We don’t feel it is a good idea to be in a location where only the criminals are carrying guns.

Sincerely,”
