I was never in the military, but I have learned a few things from all my FRiends here (I stop by the Canteen when I get a chance).

Is a “Boat” revered like a “Gunnie” in the Army and Marines? I don’t know the vernacular so I just saluted his official rank :)

Yep, its short for Boatswain ( better known as “Bosun’ mate”). I served with many a crusty SeaDog in the Deck Divisions of my sea commands, and there wasn’t a bad one in the lot. And they ALWAYS let the Junior Officers know what was right and wrong, along with having the CO and XO’s ear as well. If the Officers were worth their salt, they’d listen to what he’d say.
