A new poll from Suffolk University and the decision by two noted pollsters to declare the race a toss-up provide more evidence that voters in the Bay State could do the unthinkable next Tuesday: fill the senate seat held for almost 47 years by Ted Kennedy with a Republican. If that happens, it will be a bit of cosmic justice exacted on the state's Democrats. Not once, but twice, they changed the Massachusetts law on filling Senate vacancies to maintain their hold on power.
...Coakley's problems. She hasn't helped herself with a bad debate performance this week and a clumsy and listless campaign overall. But I suspect the voters don't like being manipulated, either. Before 2004, Massachusetts law gave the governor power to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy. But Democrats feared that then-Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican, would put a fellow GOPer in the seat if Sen. John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, made it to the White House. So they changed the law to require a special election 145 to 160 days after declaration of the vacancy. Until then, the seat would sit empty. Before his death last August, Kennedy called on Gov. Deval Patrick (D) to quickly appoint someone to his Senate seat. After his death, the state legislature changed the law again to allow Patrick to fill the seat with someone who would serve until Tuesday's election. Patrick tapped Paul Kirk, a former chairman of the Democratic Party and close friend of Kennedy's. Gubernatorial appointment to fill senate vacancies is undemocratic. Voters should have a say in who represents them in Washington. But had Massachusetts Democrats left the system enough alone six years ago, they wouldn't be facing the scare of their lives right now.

Deserts?
Republicans had better make sure they have poll watchers EVERYWHERE in the state. And they had better be damned sure absentee ballots are signature checked! Even then, anything less than a 100,000 vote win will go to the dem. “Missing votes” will be found in trunks all over the state if necessary.
Just deserts - you know, it’s just those dry, dusty, sandy geographic areas...
desserts? oh... nevermind.
I heard too, that the election won’t be certified until 10 days or more after the election.
And, if it’s close, we could see months of wrangling and lawsuits and re-counts, such as happened with Al Franken in Minnesota. Delays like that help the Dems because their flunky temporary appointee Senator in Washington will serve until any election problems are resolved. You can count on that.
desserts? oh... nevermind.
No kidding! Reading the posts at the link to the WaPo shows the people of Mass are ready to elect Brown. Look for a long drawn-out recount where Coakley eventually wins by less than 200 votes. Think Al Franken.
In fact, that's what the GOP should be ready to start saying in unison as soon as the votes are tallied, if it's close as expected. The GOP should be all over the alphabet networks saying "It's Al Franken all over again, folks!".
BTW, Don't editors decide what the headline will be? Who exactly mispelled "desserts" and why?
And the Dems are in the fight of their lives for this seat.
That this race is even close says volumes about what the country thinks of these arrogant eletists that have been running things since Curley moved the Boston mayor desk into his jail cell.
Tipping point?
Obama could fly up for a cup of coffee and be back in the White house in a couple of hours ..... and he’s not going anywhere near Massachusetts.
Gotta have an effect of turnout and motivation among the Democrats.
Oh, I thought it was the FReeper poster that made the mistake...
Wow... and they probably consider themselves to be elite, educated class liberals too.

Live in or near MA? Volunteers still needed at many regional offices. If you can help, please email Laura@brownforussenate.com and she will tell you how.
If you live in Massachusetts, become an election judge. In Boston they pay $135-$185 and they NEED Republican monitors.

I saw a bumper sticker in Massachusetts this summer. It read “Equality to a man? Why lower myself.” Fight the fight, good lady. /sarc
