Texas loses offensive swagger after injury to McCoy

Colt McCoy had fallen early to injury leaving the Texas offense in shambles. True freshman QB Garrett Gilbert stepped into the harsh spotlight of the biggest game in college football and looked like a freshman ought to look when thrown into that situation; scared and shaky.

I have to tip my hat to Mack Brown for pulling Colt McCoy. Lesser coaches would have not done that.

I was proud of my Horns. Never quit. Came so close to pulling it out in the face of monumental adversity.

A few positives:

1) A team that was sometimes denigrated as “not worthy competition” after the Nebraska game proved QUITE worthy, jumping to an early lead in the 1st quarter and pulling to within 3 with only 2 minutes to go. Considering his circumstances, Gilbert was impressive indeed. And, but for that one blindside tackle late in the fourth quarter that sealed the game, Texas’ offensive line played a superb game against the impressive Alabama defense.

2) Texas outgained Alabama in offensive yards, even playing a rookie freshman QB who came in cold. The Texas “D” flat out shut down the vaunted ‘Bama offense. Texas lost but I question whether Texas lost to a superior team or because of McCoy’s injury. Texas lost to Alabama by less of a margin than Florida, by the way.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that Garrett Gilbert is being unfairly pilloried for a poor team performance by Texas. Point 1: For the first 6 minutes of the game, Alabama turned in one of the most inept performances I’ve witnessed in many a year. The capper was an all-time classic boner: forgetting that the ball is “live” on a kickoff — that’s JV 101 stuff. Point 2: Once Alabama adjusted the blocking assignments on its offensive line, thus giving its QB more than a tenth of a second before being swarmed by Longhorns, the outcome was not seriously in doubt. Overall, Alabama had the better team, even when Texas had McCoy in the game. I played offensive tackle in kid ball, so of course I’m prejudiced — yet, IMHO, what draws the fans are the passes and runs, but the game is won or lost by blocking and tackling. Point 3: The kid QB for Texas will be unfairly scorned for a poor performance, when he actually did very well. He kept putting passes into the hands of receivers, who kept dropping the ball, including one in the end zone and the sure-to-be-infamous shovel pass. Had the Texas receivers done their jobs, the score at halftime should have been ‘Bama 17, Texas 13. Quarterbacks are not fungible — each has his own style, include a distinct angle and a unique speed of delivery, and a different degree of rotation. It is critical when the 2d-string QB comes in that the receivers make a conscious effort to adjust; the Texas receivers simply didn’t do that. So, point 4: Overall, it was an ugly game — but so was the LSU win several years back. This was a game that only the mothers of the Alabama players would truly love. But winning when it turns ugly is the difference between #1 and #2. ‘Bama overcame a very bad start; Texas got spooked by an ugly turnaround. Don’t blame Gilbert for a poor team performance. It was a righteous win for Alabama, which pulled it together and played as a team for the final 54 minutes.

As a Bama fan, I was impressed by Gilbert’s performance in the 2nd half

Bama’s my team, but Texas really cam ater them. Whether McCoy would have made a difference or not is something we can never know, as, if he had stayed in the game, Bama would have changed her play-calling. He's a great young man, though, and I wish him very well.

Texas’ mistake was not having an experienced backup QB. If you depend mostly on one man, he has to stay healthy.

I hope we meet again next year. In the meantime, though, I'm going to savor this victory. It's been a long time coming.

Doesn't look hurt here when he claps top video with his right arm just after having been hit.

Also doesn't look hurt when he moves the arm at the elbow in the bottom video.

Also we don't see him try to lift his arm after the hit even once.

Problem is it doesn't look like McCoy was hurt on the play.

I only watched much of the first quarter. You could see what was gonna happen after the QB went down, but it took longer than I thought.

It looked as if the Texas receivers thought they were gonna get their heads taken off when their young quarterback hung them out to dry...didn't want to take the chance of making a catch.

Alabama is indeed an awesome football team. “Rock solid” is the way I would put it.

Congratulations on a fine season and your national championship! It appears Alabama will be a force to be reckoned with next season as well.

Yeah. I imagine that it would be. Best of luck to him though. The game might have been different if he had been in it. Might not have been, either. We’ll never know.

Being a gamey Auburn fan (who really likes Alabama to win when they aren’t playing Auburn) and who derives great humor from the college football fanatics down south, I have gigged some of my Bama faithful friends with a couple of observations:

1- Alabama has claimed yet another of their many national titles carrying an asterisk: beating Texas without their legend Colt MCoy

2- When are they going to fire Saban, because that is what they did last time they won a title (1992 with Gene Stallings, though admittedly, they did wait a year or so).

All in fun ‘cause they they take it so serious!

All humor aside, congratulations to Bama, you have a great team and program. I like it like that. Texas has a great team, too, and it would have been a truly awesome game had McCoy been able to play

A good way to look at it. Sure did seem as if they didn’t want the ball.

I think Bama’s problem may be with Saban. When is he going to take another big $$ offer now?
