In a study published in January 7, 2010 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers from four Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers and two non-VA hospitals found preoperative cleansing of patients skin with chlorhexidine-alcohol is superior to cleansing with povidone-iodine for preventing surgical-site infection.

The biggest problem with the iodine prep is that you must wait for the iodine to completely dry before it becomes bactericidal. It takes time for the iodine to completely dry so consequently it probably gets used incorrectly when used in the operating room. My favorite prep was tincher of iodine because ioban would stick to it and it dried quickly. Unfortunately it was banned from the operating room because it has an alcohol base and is very flammable.
yea but with betadine you always know if you missed an area because of the color. If they would put a coloring agent in chlorhexidine I would like it better.
