Insist that GOP Make Repeal of Government-Run Health Care a 2010 Issue
The American Thinker ^ | December 27, 2009 | J. Robert Smith

Among conservatives, the GOP is often referred to as the "Stupid Party" for its tonedeaf, ham-handed, wrong-footed management of key issues like taxes and government spending. With the Senate's passage of government-run health care legislation, Democrats are making their bid to replace the GOP as not just the Stupid Party, but the stupidest party since the Whigs owned the title in the first half of the 19th century.

But conservatives need to insist that the GOP press its opposition to big-government health care right through the 2010 elections. Think it's unnecessary to insist? Think again. Moderate Republicans have very little shark in them. In other words, while they may smell blood in the water, they're apt not to go in for the kill.

I’m for that. Any RNC money request will draw a reply “When I see you’re seriously targeting the repeal of ObamaCare, then you’ll see a donation from me.”

It would be important to oppose the entire bill, not just the taxes. That’s been the common approach in the past.

Not enough. They need to undo virtually everything these children have done during this “administration”....and then continue to roll back Fed Gov growth and spending.

Then again, monkeys may fly out of my butt......

Do NOT give money to the RNC, no matter WHAT they promise. Only give money to qualified candidates, wherever they may be, in your district, in your state, or elsewhere. Whatever money you have to give, give it wisely. The RNC may temporarily mimic the words of conservatives, but they are not now conservative and will not be conservative... not until after Palin is President, at the earliest.

If the RNC doesn't do this, and I see no sign it intends to, then socialized medicine is a done deal. The Republicans will no doubt say, "Look, we can't just push this back, so we have to accept that this is the way things are and move forward."

At which point, there will be almost no reason to support the Republicans (note, I wrote "almost"). Their failures during the Bush years, their lack of vigorous defense of so many conservative positions, shows they are just a big, bloated party which just kind of sits there and promises to veto tax raises, and that's good enough to keep them in position.

But they are a lethargic group that doesn't seem to have the courage of our convictions. If they just shrug and refuse to fight and turn back Obamacare before the mid-teens, then it's over, and a new conservative party will have to be started because there will be only a few scraps of support for our positions here and there, without the fire that is needed by those who would defend what this country is supposed to be about.

And for 2012 add the following:

You can insist all you want, but even if the GOP wins in 2010, it won't have the 67 votes in the Senate or the 290 votes in the House needed to override a veto by 0bama.

I figure the GOP will make this promise, but as usual, fail to deliver, because it has never cut any welfare program.

Add to the list:

Term limits
Withdraw from UN
Protect the borders
Fair trade, not “free” trade - bring back American manufacturing
Nuclear power and develop US petroleum resources
Keep Gitmo open

It may not have the 67 votes or 209 votes to override an Obama veto. However, Congress can refuse to appropriate funds for the new agencies required to implement Obamacare. Congress has the power of the purse, not the President. Just don’t fund the program from 2011 to 2013 when hopefully there will be a new President who won’t veto a bill to end Obamacare.

Sorry but that is even more misplaced optimism. The GOP has never seen a welfare program it did not like. If the GOP had a track record of cutting back welfare programs, as well as the size of government in general, then I could share in your hope. But they don't, and I can't.

Whether it is “Building the Wall”, or repealing healthcare, the GOP umbrella organizations really have a tough time figuring it out. I’m beginning to wonder if the best way to ‘repeal’ something like this is to fund it at a zero level.

Hopfully they’ll have over 50% in the Senate or House and they can force the issue of zero funding for a myriad of agencies.

After election: NOT!

IMO, the first step is to stop the final passege of the bill. The second step is “nullifican”, by every conservative attorney general.

“If the GOP had a track record of cutting back welfare programs, as well as the size of government in general, then I could share in your hope. But they don’t, and I can’t. “

Thank you for a much needed dose of political reality. The GOP has been asleep at the switch. There are no real leaders in Congress, and no real answer to Obamacare.

People are afraid of healthcare costs.

The only way to “fix” this and the myriad other socialist programs that both parties put in place over the years is to let America go bankrupt.

There is a theoretical way to avoid it, but as you said - nobody in either party has ever eliminated or reduced government. Just because we don’t have the money has not and will not be a deterent to government growth, until, of course, there really IS no more money they can spend.

Conservatives should focus on the politics of government financial collapse - and the likelihood that neither the Democrat party nor the GOP will survive without major change, if they survive at all.

I also forgot to mention this. Say the GOP does win and tries to defund 0bamacare. The Democrats probably already have ads set up for every media that will blast to the masses "THE GOP IS CUTTING YOUR HEALTHCARE AND IT WILL KILL YOU."

The Democrats already have an answer to that. It is the same thing they do any time someone tries to cut back any welfare program. See my post #19.
