The threat of shunning is particularly vicious as applied by JWs. In their own words -

What a sad, sorry, little cult. I will say this: their proofs are rather extensive (and were even back when they used the KJV before compiling a rather creative new version). They are correct in as much as they say that the NT was not extensively explicit on the Trinitarian formula, with the exception of John. John is explicit and that is swept under the Watchtower rug. The Church developed their understanding of these strange and extensive ideas that Jesus taught them but it took a long time for these uneducated and provincial people to get their arms around it all.
Look at the development of the Apostles Creed (ca. 180) to the Nicene Creed and that to the even more explicit Athenasian Creed.
This is the Faith of Christianity; let those who repudiate it at least have the courtesy to jettison their self description of Christian when they jettison Christian belief.
You are right, the JW’s are particularly vicious in this practice. And they miss the whole point. Jesus hung out with sinners. JW’s shun anyone outside their organization. Blind guides. Describes them perfectly.

One has to laugh. It’s the boy who cried “wolf” and he has devotees that lack any common sense. But the laughter stops when one realizes that they are playing games with peoples eternal lives with God. They deny the souls existence, the very essence of who and what we are, and people believe them. They deny eternal punishment for disobedience thereby damning themselves and others to the hell they deny. What they refuse to see is that actions have consequences and God told us what they are. Denial doesn’t make them cease to exist. And all those who lead others astray will have unimaginable torment for lying to God’s children. I’m surprised that so many risk eternity on a lie when common sense and a good look at what they’re being told would save them.
