Yes — and that compares very favourably to the $28,638,131 opening weekend for Titanic.

Just saw Avatar. You should go see it for the visual effects alone. It is without a doubt the most visually stunning movie ever created. It is hard to tell the real actors from the CGI actors. The movie slips in and out of the real and CGI worlds without notice.
The story is OK, a little better than I expected. There is some PC thrown in, and a couple of war references (shock and awe). But it does not dwell on the WHY of what is going on. Just that it IS going on. You just get immersed in the stunning visual world you are watching. WOW.
This will be a turning point for future movies and computer games. 5 years from now, many movies will employ this technology. Go see it in 3D or Imax.

From what I've heard, the effects are astounding -- IF you watch the movie in an IMAX theater with 3-D capability. My co-worker claimed that in 3-D it LOOKED like she was in the mushroom forest with the movie's protagonists.
As for me, the storyline is too propagandistic. Might as well re-read some early-70s Ursula K. LeGuin. I'll sit this one out.

3) To educate people about Evolution and humanity's transition to transgenderism. Huh?
The next "global warming" hoax. No proof whatsoever.

Titanic was in 1997.
Compare it to something in this decade.

Well I am sure the clothes would be the immediate give away as well as just the way he acted. I always look at the hands in animation as most characters are drawn with only three fingers (Johnny Quest being an exception as you know). I am not sure about the accents, it seemed to be a mix of native american, carribean and african. The female leads were played by african american women.
The gal who lends her voice to Neytiri is Zoe Saldana. She also played Uhura on Star Trek.

I used Titanic for comparison, because it was by the same director. Also — you were the first to mention it. ;-)
Despite the über-liberal “message”, I'll probably go to this flick; if it's shown at the local IMAX. I admit I'm an FX and CGI junkie. I like movies where things go “boom” — and if they do so on a giant screen, in 3D, so much the better. I'll just let my mind go blank (like the hero was told to do, before being hooked up to his avatar) & let the “message” roll right over me.
I wish that Cameron had taken Samuel Goldwyn's advice, and just sent a telegram.

I havent scanned the replies yet, but can someone tell me why such a pure race of aliens who are at one with nature and love each other so much have to have a WARRIOR class of tribesman??

There are actually several tribes of Na’vi. They had in the past been united under Neytiri’s great grandfather. They were not so much warriors as hunters.
