With his term almost up why are they bothering with this?

As I understand, it is part of the process agreed to in negotiations. The Commies are claiming his ouster was illegal. The debate is to confirm that the action taken on June 28 was indeed in accordance with the Honduran constitution.

The accord signed off on by USA was USA would recognize election results IF (1) Congress voted on reinstalling Zelaya until the end of his term (through December) - no reinstate - just vote on it, (2) that Honduras would install a “unity government” - Zelaya did not nominate anyone for this but as a good gesture the acting Pres could step down and the newly elected guy Lobos and maybe some other cool heads from both parties could serve as head of state until Zelaya’s term expired and (3) peaceful, fair and orderly election -which it was.
