During the Thanksgiving season especially, Americans should give thanks to our brave men in uniform, and women, too, fighting in hostile lands under atrocious conditions.

But there's another duty upon us as Americans with a debt of gratitude to our armed forces.

Strangely enough, I get real tired of looking at the bright side, that f’n silk purse and silver lining, looking for reasons to be thankful in that it compromises the reality of the bad side.

1 compromising Iraqi eliminated = 1 living breathing soldier

who isn’t free.

Absolutely nothing against Marcus Lutrell, mind you. However I think someone should consider writing the flip side of “Lone Survivor”.

From the article:
,br>............As Boston Globe columnist Kevin Cullen noted, al-Khazali is a leader of Asaib al-Haq, an Iranian-backed "special group" that in 2007 kidnapped and killed five American soldiers. Later, the group kidnapped five British contractors, three of whom are known dead. Ghazali's release, a U.S. military spokesman told the New York Times, came as "part of a reconciliation effort between the government of Iraq and Asaib al-Haq."

I don't get this. How would releasing this terrorist provide for a safer Iraq? Diana makes a good point how we (and Iraq) coddle convicted or imprisoned Iraqis while throwing the book at our own military accused of wrong-doing.

One of the latest cases should be enough proof for most Americans to wonder just how out of whack our military justice system has become. Three Navy SEALs currently face court martial for allegedly punching a terrorist who masterminded the killing, mutilation, and filming the aftermath of 4 American contractors.

It is becoming more obvious there is a problem within military leadership. It appears too many are worried about their own careers vs protecting the men who fight under them.

You can rank the politicians, including GWB right in with the military. What is it really, that is going on? The ONLY way to really combat terrorism is to kill the terrorists. I believe there are tons of Muslims who would want this also. They don't side with the terrorists, and they are afraid of them, too. So what is it really? It has to go beyond just protecting your career. If it doesn't, we are done, and there is no use hanging on. Just put a bullet through our collective head.

Well, bhfred, although the results might be the same, I think Bush’s reasons for not doing more for accused military were far different than obama’s. Bush respected his military and stayed out of military leadership decisions. When his generals asked for more troops (the surge in Iraq), he ignored popular opinion at the time and followed their advice. obama on the other hand views them as a photo-op and dithers about Afghanistan while his general is begging for more troops.

There seems to be little effort to stand up for our troops once they are accused. It seems too many of the military leaders over the years have been promoted based more on staying out of trouble vs. making the tough calls when they are called for. JMHO.

Yes, there is a big difference between Bush and obama. But Bush was too worried about his legacy to Pardon Evan Vela. For him to have respected his military at the level that counts just as much (more) as the top brass he had a funny (you can see me laughing) way of showing it.

I expect NOTHING from obama. He is just a puppet on a string. A whipping boy.

Charge Navy SEALS with punching a terrorist? They deserve, at least, what they are granting terrorists. A civilian trial in hometown USA. Not only would they be found Not Guilty, they would get an admonishment: Only a fat lip? You guys are NAVY SEALS...
