Yes, an Oak tree may have 40 rings, and is thus 40 years old, but there haven't been any sunspots in the last few years, and it's kinda cold, isn't it...

How does one separate out the effects of varying rainfall from those of varying temperature?

Silly me — one doesn't. You just assume that all changes which support global warming are caused solely by temperature changes. Any changes which contradict the global warming scenario can then be attributed to rainfall variations.
