Watertown, N.Y. At the Northside Improvement League here in town a rally for Democratic congressional candidate Bill Owens has just gotten underway with remarks by local Democratic politicians. June O'Neill, executive chair of the New York Democratic party, just finished delivering a stemwinder about "right-wing extremists" bringing their "hatemongering" to the 23rd District.
Biden is going to speak any minute, and there are maybe 250 people gathered (50 of them are with the media); Watertown has a population of 30,000. The event is open to the public--no one needed a ticket to get in--but the room is only about 65 percent full. The turnout suggests that Joe the Vice President might not connect with working class voters (the kind who populate Watertown) as much as the White House believes he does.
All the voters are too busy clinging to their guns and religion.
****The turnout suggests that Joe the Vice President might not connect with working class voters****
His first remark will be *the economy shows so much improvement, thanks to Obama, that most folks are at work and couldn’t make it.*
Never waste a crisis!!
Biden could speak to an empty roomful of mirrors and be happy about it if the reflections were of himself.
Ft Drum is right outside Watertown....
Plenty of conservative Pro military people reside in St Lawrence County.
The White House and the DNC have severely underestimated just how conservative the NY 23rd district is.
“Northside Improvement League”...do you spell that A-C-O-R-N?
I don’t expect Biden to get it- insulting the largest group in the voting public doesn’t get you any fans.
“All the voters are too busy clinging to their guns and religion.”
Bitterly...
Yea, but he's a white guy who talks like a guy from upstate NY ! How can they not relate?

65% of 30,000 is still pretty good. I mean it is a Monday afternoon? Aren’t most people at work? Plus you have to take the Republicans out of the 30,000 too. I am sorta surprised that 20,000 showed up. Why are we saying that is a dud? I guess I don’t get it. I was hoping that when I read it that it said only 65 people showed up...not the whole dang town.
So has the RNC!
Good people in Watertown, and at Fort Drum. Solid. Reliable. Conservative.
Uhm... unless you are just joking... it wasn’t 65% of the town, but 65% of the rooms capacity. There weren’t more than ca. 250 people... 50 from the media.
250 people had shown up, including 50 members of the media. 250 was 65% of capacity for the venue, so they weren’t even expecting 500 people to begin with.
250 people gathered (50 of them are with the media); Watertown has a population of 30,000.
65% refers to the room being 65 percent full (or 35% empty)
250 people from a population of 30,000 is about .01 percent.
Good people in Watertown, and at Fort Drum. Solid. Reliable. Conservative - all of which were at work, thus explaining why there were only 250 people at Joe’s presser.
Surely you jest!
One thing in 0bie’s favor is he brought us a veep who keeps the comedy going. Biden The Slow’s array of buffoonery is truly entertaining. What’s most hilarious is when he thinks he’s being philosophical. That’s when Joe’s at his comedic best!
