On the one hand, the only reason I’m at all surprised by this headline is that I had heard precisely the opposite reason cited for her withdrawal; “big tent” Republicans have sided with Democrats against conservatives at every turn for my entire lifetime. (Christine Todd Whitman, Arnold Schwartzenegger, William Weld, Pete Wilson, Michael Bloomberg, and on and on and on)

On the other hand, “quietly” in this context means that she has done so without any public statements. In other words, the news article cannot back up its own assertions. This is the old “unnamed sources” gambit, and is entirely worthless.

If Hoffman loses, the blame needs to be put squarely where it belongs: on the RNC leadership that chose Scozzofava in the first place, on know-nothings like Newt and Steele for letting it happen, and on cowards like Huckabee and Romney for not stepping up and supporting the conservative.

If Hoffman wins, the same people need to be chastised for letting it become an issue in the first place.

We can’t let this keep happening between now and 2012.

During the day Saturday, she began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens.

Quietly and thoughtfully??? Don't you love how these liberals are always characterized as "thoughtful"

How about this version: During the day Saturday, she began to secretly and vindictively encourage her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens

Amazing. The national Republican Party spent all that money and support on Scozzanitwit only to see her endorse the very Democrat that she was running against. They should have seen this coming.

Next time the Republican Party calls and asks me for money, we're going to have a chat before I tell them to go to hell.

As we have been saying all along, Scozzafava is more Democrat than Republican.

I don’t believe it for a minute.

The msm will do anything possible to screw the conservative candidate.

In her statement Saturday morning, the assemblywoman explained the reasons behind her decision: "It is increasingly clear that pressure is mounting on many of my supporters to shift their support. Consequently, I hereby release those individuals who have endorsed and supported my campaign to transfer their support as they see fit to do so."

During the day Saturday, she began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens.

OMG!

“Thoughtfully,” no less. What a surprise. She’s really a thinker, I guess.

There is nothing in the article that shows she said that, other than the line created by the writer, of a paper endorsing the RAT.

The "props" this paper gives to RATowens sounds like some flowery self written wedding vows.

If she was to do that and there is ANY proof, email, audio or otherwise, she just took the local and national GOP sliver of respect and sh*t on it. Unless she decided to retire from politics, there is no party that would take a "traitor" and run it/her for serious office.

It is distinctly possible that the Watertown Paper is a left of center publication who wishes Owens to win? Whom did they endorse?

For a member of Congress, there may be a time to promote reform in Washington, but there is also a time to work within a system that best serves the people you represent.

It is frightening that Mr. Hoffman is so beholden to right-wing ideologues who dismiss Northern New Yorkers as parochial when people here simply want to know how Mr. Hoffman will protect their interests in Washington.

So just how is Doug Hoffman "beholden" to right wing ideologues and we now have "representative government" as a means to protect our entitlements in DC ? .

Interesting how "The Conservative Party" is an ideologue yet the multiple progressive organization in DC and around the country are not ????

“During the day Saturday, she began to quietly and thoughtfully encourage her supporters to vote for Democrat William L. Owens.”
Thats the extent of the story as it relates to her backing Owens. The rest is the papers endorsement of Owens. I would have appreciated them fleshing out the story a bit. How odd to mix actual breaking news, for that what it is,with an endorsement.

I knew it, I KNEW it!
I called this yesterday as soon as it came out she was withdrawing. I posted that she'd endorse the RAT.

If the GOP continues to support candidates like Dede, the party is done for. How many Olympia Snowe’s, Susan Collins and Arlen Specter’s (even Dubya supported him over Pat Toomey) do they need in order to realize that if they are not a party that proves that it is a REAL alternatice to Democrats, the people might as well vote for the real deal?

No big loss. Her mom wouldn't have voted for Hoffman anyway.

No surprise there. The question is how many will cross over and vote for Owens and how many will just stay home.
