Two fortunate pooches -- each a survivor of very close calls -- trotted off with first prizes in the Westport Animal Shelter Advocates' (WASA) first Top Dog show near the basketball court at Compo Beach Sunday.
Kobe Heinze, a 72-pound pit bull, won "Top Kisser" honors when he smooched with owner Scott Heinze, a New York City Fire Department paramedic who lives in Westport. Altagracia Heinze co-owns Kobe, who is named after basketball star Kobe Bryant.
Abby Chase, meanwhile, a lightweight Sheltie, proudly wore the blue ribbon signifying her new status as "Top Tail Wagger."
Owner Lee Chase, of Rocky Hill, said, "Abby broke her neck runing into a concrete bench in the dark at 4 a.m. I thought she was dead when I took her to the Norwalk Animal Hospital."
"But after a while she wagged her tail. The vet said that was a sign Abby would survive the broken neck."
Kobe's close call, meanwhile, was on-going for weeks as an abandoned dog in the Bronx, N.Y.
"We found him skin and bones, doused with perfume outside a Bronx restrauant in February of 2001," Scott Heinze said. "It was terrible.
"At 26 pounds, Kobe was almost dead of starvation His eyes were red rimmed. I put him in the car and drove
