Why Obama's Poll Numbers Have Stopped Falling
The American Thinker ^ | October 16, 2009 | John Caleb Chapman

August and September were the weakest months in Obama's presidency, at least as measured by his job approval numbers. However, in October Obama seems to be making a comeback even as the economy takes a turn for the worse and as Democrats try to cram through Congress a deeply unpopular Health Care reform.

Despite the embarrassment of losing the Olympics to Rio and winning the Nobel Peace Prize though nominated only eleven days into his presidency, Obama's approval rating have stabilized and even begun to tick up. This is happening even though 57% of the American public believes that the country is on the wrong track. What can possibly explain this dissonance?

I find it interesting that the polls associated with the TV networks all seem to be consistently moving up. However, the independent pollsters like Rasmussen still have him below 50% slightly.

The electorate is not stupid. Most Americans know such a socialist utopia can't possibly exist.

Ditto what ballplayer and Doogle said. 10,000 “press secretaries” (AKA the DBM) will cover his butt from here to the end of time.

They have stopped falling because he hasn’t done anything concrete that has effected most people...yet. Gas prices are relatively low and stable. The MSM is telling them economic recovery is within grasp. They can still afford to eat out and grab a Starbucks every morning.

Forget the ratings issue, the story is fascinating. As long as things are going down as Obama says, people support him. When people feel optimistic that they can move up, they don’t.

I never thought about it that way. But his point is very very compelling. But ignore the numbers and his poll versus others. His theory is a good one.

Some people get excited by a rising stock market. That has to account for part of it.

Assuming there is some truth to this, you have to consider the voters that backed him, long time Dems, people that would never admit they made a mistake in voting for him, people that stand to gain financially from his radical policies, etc, etc.
There is a floor to his support no matter what the facts may be. Rather than conservatives just relying on the next election to help reverse these policies a multi-dimensional
approach must be taken. Constitutional and legal challenges to everything they try to do, legal action against graft and coruption, prosecution of tax evaders, media exposure, protests, etc. etc.
We can't just rely on the voting public seeing the wisdom of turning this around the next time alone.

While it is easy to focus on the national scene at FR, it is also important to do these same things at the local and state level to dismantle the Dem’s machines. We could also work to require political balance in our schools and college teaching positions, push for reducing the number of political patronage appointments, push for local term limits, limit the amount and where local politicians can get their campaign funds etc.

They’re testing polling models that give them the results they want. He’ll be up to “75% approval” soon enough.
