The verdict is finally in on the “cash for clunkers” program, and I doubt that any rational person will applaud.

I know you will find this hard to believe, but, it appears that new car sales weren’t “stimulated” at all, they were just moved from one time period to another.

The only thing it did was take hundreds of thousands of Obama bumper stickers off the road.

The problem is that Cash-for-Clunkheads was hugely successful at one thing... depleting the inventory of decent used vehicles.

There used to be car lots in my area that were chock full of used trucks. All those lots have shut down for lack of available used vehicles. Not only that, they're gone from craigslist as well. Yes, I know there are vehicles on craigslist, but not nearly the variety or quality of six months ago.

This lack of used vehicle inventory will translate, eventually, into some increase in demand of new vehicles, but hopefully not until 2013 when President Palin assumes office.

A friend of mine is a sales manager at a local car dealership. He showed me some hilarious video of his sales guys wrecking the clunkers. I’m not talking about just ruining the engines (which they did) — they played smash-up derby with them first. The wreckers were pissed—they didn’t have many parts left after the dealership was done with them.
